  • BU recruit- class of 2008 Chris Babb

Maybe Bradley can steal a player from New Mexico as payback for Danny Granger?

Chris Babb is a 6'4", 205 pound shooting guard from The Oakridge School, in Arlington, Texas. He originally committed to New Mexico last summer after attending Steve Alford's Elite Camp. But he decommtted from New Mexico about a week later, and is now considering Bradley among other offers he has.

Scout.com has a new premium article on Chris Babb--

In the article, Dave Telep, who is Scout's National Recruiting Director, quote's Chris Babb's father as saying Chris is having a great senior season, and averaging over 30 points a game. Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M are looking at him.
North Texas has offered, and Iowa State and Bradley, according to dad, will each receive one of his four remaining official visits.
Oral Roberts, a school Babb is no longer considering, received the other official visit.

Scout rates him 3-stars, and a number of other articles I found on him refer to him as a great shooter with a lot of range. He has a strongly built body, and is very athletic.

Here is Chris Babb's Scout profile-

Sounds like just what the doctor ordered as far as replacing JC. If he commits to BU, I will start printing the shirts - "What about Babb?"

This guy is my new #1 priority for our recruiting class next year...
Big, strong H.S. guard with unlimited range...Yes, please.

Hopefully they can get him up here to visit for the Creighton game...that should be a good arena atmosphere for him to see...

I agree ER3... This guy looks like a good fit for us.
        Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

Almost as much as I want Babb to experience the atmosphere of a home game, I want him to see tapes of guys like JC, AW, DR, WF, and SM to see just how much a multi-faceted shooter can and will thrive in our system. There are few offenses in America that are as guard-oriented as ours, and with our strong crop of big men in the pipeline, the potential for our guards to excel is only going to increase.

Aftering some Googling, I found some interesting facts:
                • Babb's team (Oakridge) is now 29-4 with a young roster (2 seniors, 3 juniors, 4 sophomores).
                • As of Jan. 22, he was averaging 30 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
                • Babb's older brother Josh played at Kansas State from 1996-2000, averaging 6.6 points during a 102-game career. His mother and father both graduated from K-State.

I found an article that explains more about why he isn't as hotly pursued - his defense and athleticisim are in question:

Mike Boelkens, the basketball coach at the Oakridge School in Arlington, Texas, readily admits his bias.

His shooting guard, Chris Babb, can shoot it. He shoots it so well, in fact, Boelkens knows that??™s the one skill Babb could contribute immediately to any of the schools recruiting the 6-foot-5 Babb, which includes Kansas State.

???Offensively, they??™re telling him he can help right away,??? Boelkens said. ???... He??™s a shooter. His range has improved dramatically. His accuracy is terrific, and he has a quick release.

???He hits consistently from five feet beyond our three-point line.???

But, in the spirit of full disclosure, Boelkens wonders how Babb would adapt on the defensive end, even though the coach insists Babb is Oakridge??™s best defensive player.

???They??™re not sure about his ability to defend on the perimeter at the Big 12 or SEC level,??? he said.

His athleticism, which isn??™t a concern at Oakridge, is being questioned. As a result, he??™s not as coveted as he might want. Nevertheless, according to Boelkens, Babb is ???star-struck??? by the attention, even if all of the major schools involved ??” K-State, Baylor and Arkansas ??” are viewing him as a backup option should their primary targets go elsewhere. That approach, coupled with Babb??™s previous intention to sign early (although Boelkens now says his star may wait until the spring to decide), has given next-tier schools such as Tulsa, TCU, Oral Roberts (where he visited last week) and UAB (which plans to visit Babb next week) hope.

???Personally, I??™d like to see Chris go to a school and get some playing time and develop,??? Boelkens said. ???I don??™t know how possible that is at a large school. ... I think he should go a notch below where he??™s looking and be an impact player right away.???

If babb is really 6'4 than he weighs much more than the 205 they list....his upper body is more like a football players!

Here is a little text from that article............

"Put up 30 points a game, keep good grades in school and shoot the basketball. That’s been Chris Babb’s senior formula and it’s got him close with a handful of programs.
Arlington (Tex.) Oakridge Academy is home to one of the top shooting guards remaining in high school basketball. Chris Babb’s senior season is a success and the one-time New Mexico pledge is listening to nationwide pitches.
“He’s turned it up a notch,” Mike Babb, Chris’ father said. “He’s having a really good season.”
Vanderbilt will be in town Tuesday night evaluating him. Texas A&M is dabbling. “He hasn’t gotten a lot more offers but he’s gotten a ton of calls and a lot of people are coming in to evaluate him.”
Babb’s season ends Saturday with Oakridge’s state tournament being played over the weekend. After that, it’ll be all recruiting, all the time.

North Texas has offered. Iowa State and Bradley, according to dad, will receive one of his four remaining official visits.
“There’s a whole lot of scenarios that can happen. We’ve talked to Baylor (visited unofficially), Kansas State and several Big 12 schools. Texas Tech has come out to watch him.”

Mr Brooks needs to get a verbal from him as this is the perfect place to play if you are a talented guard; hopefully he takes his visit when we play SIU or Creighton.
