It was just announced on ESPN. I'm sure there are some mixed feelings about him, but hopefully this isn't Knight's last job in college basketball.Once A Brave ... Always A Brave -
That was rather abrupt. Wonder if something happened to a student and they kept it internal and forced him to resign or be fired?

Only health issues publicly released that I know of was last month when Knight stayed at the airport during the game because he was ill. He was ill that past couple weeks but it was really bad that night. We'll find out sooner or later.

Apparently Bob Knight gave his resignation this morning, and his son, Pat Knight will assume the role of head coach.
Lubbock is so far out in the hinterlands, the news is just now reaching the mainstream...
"Knight informed Athletic Director Gerald Myers of his immediate resignation on Monday morning and Knight's son, Pat, will coach the Red Raiders for the remainder of the season."
Here is a little more from the premium Texas Tech web site....apparently Bob Knight has had more than one feud with the Texas Tech fans and the local community regarding lousy attendance.
Well, the last two games had really bad announced attendance plus numbers of empty seats, and the rumors is that he'd had enough and decided right now is quitting time.
There could be more, but nobody knows......
He is 138-82 at Texas Tech, and retires with 902 wins in his lifetime.Comment

I am a huge Bobby Knight fan and my allegiances will follow him wherever he goes. I believe that he has trained Pat Knight very well to take over Texas Tech, but am very concerned by the abruptness of his resignation. There's only a few things I could see it being: 1) illness, 2) another stupid controvery and he doesn't want to deal with the BS anymore, 3) its time to hand things over to Pat and maybe some other opportunity intrigues him....
I sure hope its reason #3. College basketball just won't be the same without him. I watch and follow Texas Tech just because of him and Pat. And I don't just go "waiting to see what he will do", which is the headline anytime he goes anywhere. I go to see a man who: 1) runs a clean program, 2) develops players to play to a potential that is greater than any scout could forsee, 3) turns out great players and men that I love to follow whatever their future career may be, 4) to see his awesome motion offense, 5) see how he adapts to different gameplans thrown his way, and 6) to support a man that has made a big difference from a scholarly sense anywhere he has ever been.
My heart is very sad tonight. At least on Wednesday, I can see (or hear) Bradley basketball, which fuels me with joy the same way many of Bob Knight's teams have.

I am aware of some of Bob Knight's differences with the administration that have arisen over his career at Texas Tech and his beef about attendance (which is pathetic) at TTU.
I was in Austin, Texas for the Texas Tech game against the ranked Longhorns. I could not get tickets and scalpers were asking for more money than the UT-Kansas game. I had to watch the game on TV and the local news mentioned that the sell out crowd had more to do with Bob Knight than the ranked Longhorns. Bob Knight was the reason I wanted to go, but I thought I was a just a midwestern anomaly.
I don't follow attendance figures as much as most people that post here, but I've been to decent Longhorns games with a lot of empty seats (even during their most recent final four year). It actually amazes me that they get the recruits they do, because it is not a great basketball atmosphere. During basketball season, the football team still gets the main headlines in Austin.Comment

A couple sources are reporting that the news first broke as Pat Knight, Bobby Knight's son and assistant, broke the story on the coaches weekly radio program. He said Bobby Knight was "tired" and felt it was time to retire. A short time later, the Texas Tech Chancellor told an Associated Press reporter --
"He said he was tired and that it was best to go ahead and do it now," Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance told The Associated Press. "I think Bob is through with coaching. I think he got to the point where it wasn't fun for him."

I also have great respect for Knight. I actually respected Indiana when Knight was the coach. At least he made his player graduate. He graduated 98 percent of his four year players. To me, that is an accomplishment greater than his win total or his final fours or his championships.Comment

He would display some questionable behavior at times, but I can name probably about 50 other current college coaches who have said or done things they regret. He did so much for the game that is so positive that only a few current coaches could even have a chance to live up to what Knight has done.
I have been watching ESPN News at times tonight, and Steve Bunin who is anchoring the news has gone out of his way every five seconds to insult the guy! We know you feel he is controversial, and we know he stiffed you and many of your friends in your "pwecious" little news fraternity! Sorry he didn't give you the time of day! But many others in the media, including many on ESPN, have defended the guy tonight and throughout his career. And he deverses the accolades.
But I guess for "Bunion" and his ilk, Kelvin Sampson, Bob Huggins and Larry Eustachy are beyond reproach!Comment
