Post game thread- BU 63 InSU 44

Well i'm glad for the win...maybe it's me but but I though INst played terrible for the most part. yes we played decent defense but it seemed like there was several times when they just didn't shoot when there was daylight or didn't make the pass when ther teamates were open.
Watching INst play made me wonder how they won 5 games in the Valley

Great win. I'm glad JL made the adjustment and started pounding the ball inside which helped our spacing, got ISU into foul trouble and which hopefully will give our bigs the confidance needed to keep improving.

SFPete, glad to hear your comment about spacing. I had to work so I missed the game. No intention to belittle your point at all, but I mentioned this same point about spacing after the Wichita State game. As you said, adjustments have clearly been made. It's nice to see the results of a developing inside presence on our offensive schemes.

I am not worried about TW's ft's either.. Like you said earlier in the year Mob, TW has definately improved in this area.

Some additional points I thought noteworthy. BU did a really nice defensive job on Marico Stinson. A Dub started out on him and I thought Stinson might turn it around when fouled on his 3 point attempt. Stinson made all three freebies, but that was his highlight finishing with only ten points on 3 of 14 shooting including 1 of 7 from beyond the arc.

The refs finally made an offensive call on the ball handler pushing off with his off arm. I’ve complained about this before. The only problem this time, the only reason it was called was the forearm came off the defensive man’s chest up into his chin.

In the postgame show the crew chided Austin for being quiet as Rashad answered questions with only two or three words. It was all in fun as they said more interviews would take care of it. Austin seems very well spoken, albeit quiet, and quite a nice young man. I had spoken to him at the soccer match tailgate party.

Now Sam Singh is a different interview. They had just finished praising JC for his assists, but Sam said no. JC is selfish and never passes off. Of course this was all in fun. Sam has a great sense of humor and a great attitude in general especially with all he has gone through. He’ll do well in life after basketball.

SS & JC was possibly the best post game interview that Snell & Coach have ever had. They are both articulate and know the game so well but at the same time they can really dish it out. They needed AW to complete a trifecta

My thoughts......Indiana State goes with way too small of a lineup.
BU is not a team that can usually beat you inside, but that's exactly what we did to them!

Jay Tunnell is a 3-4 and generally plays well away from the bucket, and their other starting FWD, McCoy plays more like a weak Will Franklin, and was no help inside.

That brings me to Isiah Martin, the highly touted stud from Chicago Morgan Park. This kid has a long, long way to go!! He was totally ineffective, got screamed at numerous times by the coach using the "F" word, and can't make a basket if he had a ladder.

He shoots only 40% from the FT line although he DID account for the only point Indiana State got from their bench, when he sloppily banked in one of his three free throws!
For as many minutes as he played, his rebound total (only two) is bad when you see guards like Stinson (7 rebounds) and Gabe Moore (5 rebounds) outrebounded Martin.

In a (relatively weak freshman) season when just about any freshman who gets more than 10 mpg off the bench has a shot being on the All-Freshman Team, Martin may not get much notice.

Well........I think Sam Maniscalco will edge the guy out........

And one of the kids who was on the MVC All Freshman Team last year along with Drake's Josh Young, Marico Stinson, and Osiris Eldride, Cole Holmstrom was also completely ineffective, although he was used quite effectively last year by Royce Waltman. I can't believe Holmstrom will stay at Indiana State if McKenna only plays him as a deep reserve.

Carter?really?...He looked like the least likey guy who belongs on a basketball floor. He's not quick,tall,didn't see much of a shot..I don't know..to me he looked like he should holding the TV camera instead of playing in front of one...number 5 didn't look like much either IMO....

Overall, I thought it was a really good team effort...Austin really played well...I think he should be able to get to the point where he is getting 20+ minutes per night if he continues to work hard...that would bode well for this team's chances as I think he brings more athleticism and offensive potential to the floor than Salley does...Ruff made some unbelievable highlight reel passes last night, but he also had a few really bad turnovers trying to force the ball into openings that simply weren't there...gotta take the brilliant with the bad with him, I suppose...It's clear we're a million times better on both ends of the court with him out there...I just wish he could suppress that part of his brain that seems obsessed with trying to earn style points by making the miracle play every time down the court...

The only thing I did not like about this game was the way that BU played with the lead down the stretch...They get a 9 or 10 point lead with 6 minutes to go and they are still running the ball up the court and jacking up threes with 28 seconds left on the shot clock...they make one pass and a guy goes flying into the lane and commits a charge with 26 seconds on the shot clock, etc., etc...That is a terrible, terrible way to try and finish off a game...Now it worked out for them in this game because they converted some of those quick shots and also because Indiana State was completely inept on the offensive end and couldn't capatilize on BU's quick missed shots and turnovers...but I really wish they would value the ball more when they get the lead late...Run 25 seconds off the shot clock and then go into your offense...that same exact 3 pointer that you are shooting quick with 28 seconds on the shot clock is going to be there with 5 seconds on the shot clock. I guess I just remember watching those good Creighton teams get a 7 or 8 point lead with 4 minutes to go and you knew it was almost impossible to come back on them...Funk would just pull the ball out around half court and stand there for 25 seconds every possession...Then, they'd run their offense and get a score or get fouled with 2 seconds on the shot clock...and it was like a punch in the gut because they ran a half minute off the clock AND scored on you...

by and large i agree with you, but i think we have to be careful of going into what is the basketball equivalent of the 'prevent' offense. I certainly don't suggest we should jack up ill-advised 3s early in the shot clock, but i also think that if a shot is there, you take it. regardless of where you are in the shot clock. Especially with minutes to go, you can't sit back and wait for the W to come to you .. you have to step on their throats and take the W.

I disagree that the same shot will be there at 5 seconds as was there early in the shot clock. it's situational; difficult to generalize, but what I see with this team when the shot clock winds down is typically a forced 3 or an ill-advised layup that gets blocked. sometimes they go in .. but not exactly waht i call high-percentage basketball.

bottom line is, when you get an open look, you take it. Id rather shoot a shot that has a 50% chance of going in than burn an extra 20 seconds and take a shot that has a 5% or 10% chance of going in.

Sorry, guys, but I disagree. Your argument works well if running the clock still allows you to get a good shot. Too often that is just not the case. I'm not saying you should just jack one up, but do take a shot if it is a high percentage shot no matter what the shot clock says. The proof is in the pudding as ISU could not even make a mini run. Way too often I've seen where we've tried to run clock, take a poor percentage shot, and surrender the lead.

Have to agree with the continued offense. Of course be smart and work some clock but if you have a good shot...take it. BU also went to the lane more so the %'s were better.

Yeah, I agree with MR. Unless you have 10 pt lead or so and are under 3 minutes, I'm not looking to milk the clock entirely. We run our offense(I hope) to get a good shot, so if a good shot arises be it a 3 or layup, I say take it regardless of how much time is on the shot clock.

Now JL did say we settled too much in the first half for 3 pointers, and he was right. If that's all the defense will give you, that's fine, but the middle of ISU's zone was soft all night, and BU didn't exploit that at all in the 1st half.

What I would like to see more of is BU attacking the basket with Warren and TW, and Ruff, especially when we get in the bonus. Alot of times down the stretch it seems like we don't take advantage of the fact that we are usually a very good free throw shooting team, stop shooting threes and get to the line.
