  • D League or Europe?

Just like many fans in here, I often like to follow the careers of my favorite college basketball players. Most of my favorite college basketball players are playing in Europe. But I hear that the D League is a way to perhaps get a better look by the NBA teams.

What do you think are the forces driving players that may not get drafted in choosing a D League versus a European career? I'm just curious, because I have no clue.

I like international basketball maybe even better than the NBA. Personally, I wish there was a professional league in the US that drafted the best players out of college that played a more complete game versus the one-on-many I see in the NBA. Is there any hope for this for happening? I miss my favorite college basketball stars when they graduate!

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Probably the family situation and whether or not you're willing to absorb the culture shock plays a large part in a player choosing to go to Europe.

Also, isn't pay generally better in Europe?

I thought that the European pay was decent, but the perks (free great house, I think travel home....) were extraordinary.

I believe that AP was best off waiting until he could command a good NBA contract before leaving Europe.

Pay in Europe is way better. NBDL contracts are usually $10,000 to $50,000 at most, unless the player is on loan from an NBA team, then they have NBA contracts.

But the NBDL has an agreement with the NBA that any player can be called up by an NBA team at any time, and the NBA dosn't have to "buy out" their contract. In Europe, the contracts are much harder to get out of, as the European teams will want to get paid extremely well to let their players go. But in the last couple years (and Anthony Parker has had something to do with this) NBA teams have spent more attention to the Euro players, and to the American players playing there, and there is now a better chance of getting noticed and getting an NBA offer between European seasons.
