  • Rodney Edgerson Update

News for Rodney Edgerson is not good.
If anyone stayed up late Thursday night, Washington State played and beat Utah, 69-42.
It was not a good game, as both teams played poorly with lots of turnovers and fouls.
But Utah played especially bad, and Washington State was ahead by 25 (39-14) at the half.

From that point the Washington State subs and deep subs got lots and lots of playing time, as Utah was never able to get any closer than 20-25 the rest of the game, and ended up with only 42 points on only 14 made baskets in the entire game.
Washington State is 7-2 and actually doing better than some had thought they would.

Rodney Edgerson was the 7th sub off the bench, and ended up playing only 4 minutes, missing his only two shots. He really did not look good. Seemed to be standing around waiting for someone to give him the ball, and didn't look like a guy trying to earn more playing time. Considering that Washington State is a fairly young team and Rodney was hailed as their best incoming/new scorer, this is probably not very good news for Edge. If he's only getting 4 minutes of playing time in a 25 point blowout, and is 10th to 12th in the playing rotation, he is not likely to get much more than a few minutes here and there the rest of the season.

On the season, Rodney has played in only 5 games and has made only five shots. He is very, very low on the playing rotation, and considering that he is a junior (juco transfer) and had the injury earlier this season, it may be that he should consider redshirting. Once he has played in 20% of his team's scheduled games, he cannot choose to apply for a medical redshirt, so he has to make that decision right now. If he plays in one more game he is not likley to be eligible for redshirting. I suspect he will not play in the next game next Thursday against Arizona, and a decision on a redshirt will follow.
There are a few rumors and comments about Edge on the WSU message boards, suggesting he hasn't been able to participate at 100% in practices, and therefore is in the coach's doghouse.
It has to be a tough decision for Rodney, as I am sure he wants to play, but I also suspect he doesn't want to sit the bench the rest of the year either.

I saw where Washington State beat Top 10 ranked
    Washington over the weekend.
The win is actually being reported to be the very first win over top 10 team on the road ever for Washington State.
(they were 0-52 against Top 10 teams on the road prior to that)
The Cougars were alsoplaying without their starting point guard, so the win is even more surprising,
Rodney Edgerson played 2 minutes, was 0 for 2 and scored no points. Rodney had actually started the prior game on New Year's Eve against Arizona State, a 64-49 win, but he only played 11 minutes and was scoreless in missing 3 trifectas. The Cougs are now 9-3, as Rodney hasn't scored in the last four games, and is averaging only 9 minutes per game and 1.8 points per game.

Here is a little blurb (at the bottom) about Edge
and his battle for playing time.

The win over Washington saw sophomore shooting guard Josh
Akognon score 27 points and practically single handedly take
over the game and win it.
Akognon is one of three different guards who are the top 3
scorers for WSU, and who play essentially the same spot that
Edgerson plays (shooting guard), although all three also share some PG duties.
      (something Edgerson does not do.)
Edgerson will have to score better if he wants more playing
      time.
Here is one fan's observations of RE

I checked out the results of last night's game in which Oregon visited Washington State.
Oregon beat WSU 52-50 as both teams struggled for points.

Only one Washington State player made a 3-pointer, and Rodney Edgerson didn't even get in the game.
Since Rodney isn't playing much at all, and lots of younger players are ahead of him in the rotation, is there a chance Rodney will transfer before his senior season to look for some playing time?

I don't want him at BU if that's what you're implying.

In Washington State's game over the weekend against Oregon State, again Rodney did not even get into the game.
WSU is on a 4 game losing skid (all in conference), and the lineup's being shaken around, but apparently considerations by head coach Bennett don't include Rodney.
This makes seven games in a row (all conference games) where Rodney has been used very little (2 to 13 minutes) or not at all (hasn't played in 3 of the last 4 games).
There are 11 conference games left and the conference tourney. Let's hope Edge gets a chance to show his talent.

Rodney Edgerson has aggravated his back injury and has not played in any game since 1/14.

In that interval, Washington State has been playing badly and they lost six straight to UCLA, USC, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, and California.

But Saturday, Washington had their BIG rematch with University of Washington, who they knocked off when they were in the top 10 back on Jan 7, the last game that Wash. State won.
Without Rodney, Washington State beat Washington again, this time 77-64, as Rodney continues to sit out.
Justin Dentmon had zero assists playing 35 minutes as point guard for the Washington.

Rodney has played in 9 games already, which is too many to consider a redshirt.

Rodney Edgerson is out for the year, and according to a recent interview, he might not be able to play again

Rodney Edgerson has received word he is not eligible for a medical redshirt in 2005-2006 due to playing in more games at Washington State University than allowed to gain medical redshirt status.

With only one year of eligibility, and way too many talented players ahead of him in the WSU playing rotation, Rodney knew his chances of seeing any playing time for the Cougars was slim.
                  Rodney now has transferred to
Kentucky Wesleyan and will try to recover from his back problems and play his final year there.
When Rodney was recruited to Washington State he was touted as being a true scorer who would possibly be a starter.

Kentucky Wesleyan is a Division II school, has won the NCAA D-II National Championship EIGHT times, & their head coach is Todd Lee.

In a very bad stroke of luck for Rodney, no sooner does he decide to transfer to D-II Kentucky Wesleyan, that they have been hit by the NCAA with severe sanctions.

Fortunately the basketball program won't get a post season ban, but it is likely they will have to vacate their National Titles they won in 1999 and 2001.

The PJS has a little piece about Rodney in today's paper, reporting his transfer to Kentucky Wesleyan,
a fact that was reported and discussed on this message board almost 2 months ago.
Nice to see the PJS catching up.
