  • Who should have really redshirted?

Well, we're nearly 2/3 of the way through the season, and I think it's unanimous that our biggest deficiency as a team is our interior play. It was decided prior to the season that a redshirt for Anthony Thompson was the best idea because of our supposed depth up front. Thompson looked to be the best inside player in the exhibition season. With our interior deficiencies, was that the best move for this team, this year? Will Egolf has looked lost all season. While I do think he'll be a very good player for us, this year he clearly wasn't ready to contribute.

I know hindsight is 20/20, but it looks like we may have made the wrong decision as to who to redshirt. Don't get me wrong, I am very glad and very excited at the prospect of 4 more years of Anthony Thompson, a guy who I think can have an Adebayo Akinkule-like impact defensively and maybe score a little better. However, I think Thompson could have given us an inside presence on both ends. Of course, with Matt Salley continuing to log bushels of undeserved minutes, it may have been a moot point to begin with.

Red-shirting Thompson was the right decision in my mind...I just don't think he would have been able to provide any inside presence for us this year...
I think he is skilled, and I am looking forward to seeing him develop over the next 4 years...but he simply isn't big and strong enough right now to be any kind of a presence inside for us.
He's 20 or 30 pounds away from being able to hold his own in the post against D-I players...If we tried to run him out there in the post this year, I think he'd get pushed around unmercifully and he'd likely be completely worn down (physically and mentally) by now...

I said this at the begining of the year we should have redshirted AT and Will.

I like to look at things likes this with a long term perspective. With that being said, redshirting Thompson was the best long term and short term decision. see ER3's post for my reasoning as I agree with that post.

From what we know now, redshirting Egolf probably would have been the thing to do. But with so many new players coming in this year, I think that it would be difficult to redshirt 2 players from the same class.

Thompson may have given us some added scoring but he may have been able to block more shots and make it harder for opposing teams to score in the paint; I do agree that it is going to help both him and the team in the long run ; now we need to find some more inside help for next season as I believe we have enough guards.

It sounds like Thompson has taken advantage of this redshirt season, as he has been able to work on his skills when others are working on game prep or waiting on game day.
Because of that extra time, I am certain he would be our best O big, by a large margin, right now, but it sounds like his D right now may be closer to DC's

Red shirt was the best call.
WE would of benefited from a redshirt, too Just too much of that deer in the headlights thing in the big D1.. (Even during the red/white dunk competition)
