  • IHSA to Begin Testing for Steroid Use

Who'd have ever thought it would come to this?
I think the results will surprise many when 14-18 year old kids begin to test positive.

Sadly, I agree. It should have been done 10 years ago.

It's sad that things have gone this far, but good for them for being preemptive about it before the problem gets out of hand like in baseball.

Worse yet is it being condoned by these kids parents, for several years now there has been rampant rumors one of our local high school football team players have been using steroids.

I agree that this is way too late. Why is it that it takes an uproar from the media before anyone acts (from WWF, to Bonds, to all of MLB.., now the IHSA)? I graduated from HS in 2004 and there were PLENTY of rumors going around about HS wrestlers in the Chicago area using 'roids. Since being in college and visiting other universities I have heard personal anecdotes from many, MANY HS athletes around my age about the use of steroids, personally or someone they know well. I even know of one guy who would drive to school and his steroid stash was in his trunk, many knew about it, and he even distributed it to other students on school grounds! He, in fact, was the one supplying steroids to the partiucular wrestler who many thought was using. Not only do the enhancers deteriorate and harm the users body, but in this case I am POSITIVE this steroid user got a scholarship because of his unbelieveable and undeniable strength (The kid had the physique of a junior or senior in college as a sophomore in HS). That's a scholarship that should have gone to a kid who worked his ************ off in HS, in and out of the classroom NOT a cheater.

And that's why the MLB issue is a true problem.
Nobody really cares if a millionaire destroys their body from steroids, and for millions, that may be their right.
But that behavior goes down to the Minors, then HS, then.. and you possibly wind up with thousands of destroyed kids that never really had a shot at the millions.
MLB became drug marketers to kids.

Until we as consumers stop paying money to watch/buy/support MLB, they have no reason to ever institute a strong drug policy or to even regulate the use of drugs within the sport. We are the sheep who keep filling up their stadiums and their pockets, until that stops they will keep allowing cheating.

Congress if they are going to do something they need to do something and no dog and pony show with all the grandstanding. Demand the Union eliminate the drug use, demand blood testing and demand the union stops allowing the uses, behind the mask of invasion of privacy, of drugs in the sport.

But to me it starts with us and stop spending money right now on the sport. That is the only thing the sport understands, the bottom line of money.

It will not surprize me if quite a number of football players tested positive because of the scholarships available out there ; I believe parents are not paying close attention to what their kids are taking and some choose to ignore it when it is beneficial to them ; I have talked to coaches in the area that believe this is has been going on for quite some time and once the testing starts it will make more of a level playing field.

I'd like to know what sports were tested, rumor has it that they tested a couple of tennis or soccer players (i can't recall which it was) at one local school. We all know it's the football players that are supposedly using steroids.
