Boy, do I think they are largely mistaken. From what I saw of him last year at Bradley... yikes!

I just heard from a counterpart of ours in Bloomington, Indiana. He was inquiring about a former Bradley player.

It seems that new Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson is looking for a good shooting wing player, and has called Lance Stemler and is either planning a visit or is already on his way to Southwestern Illinois College. Lance has really improved his stock by waiting to sign, and he now has a couple of high majors with extra scholarships knocking at his door. He might end up at Indiana.

Here are the latest couple articles about Lance. There is no mention of Indiana, but they do say he has only 3 visits set up which means he could add a couple more.

Here is where the rumor got it's start- it's a thread from the St. Louis board--

There is a thread on the free Indiana board, and a lot more discussion on their premium board, which I don't have any way of seeing. But here is the thread on the free board-

I didn't go through and read the IU boards so I don't know if this was mentioned or not, but Smapson did offer Lance a full ride.

Lance came by and talked for 30 minutes or so with all the family members of the BU players while we were at the BU-Pitt game in Michigan.
My observation is that Lance has bulked up, and gotten lots stronger.
You can say what you want about observations from a couple years ago when he was coming off an entire season of redshirt due to injury, then he also had that groin injury that kept him from getting off to a good start at BU, but those observations are presently irrelevant.
Lance has made himself into a fine player.
At one of the better jucos, at the top level of juco play, he showed he was among the top 10 in the nation in scoring and 3-point shooting.
He was a national player of the week once and was a FIRST TEAM All American as well.
How can a school -- even a Big Ten school NOT at least want to take a look at the guy?
Je'Kel Foster who was a key piece of Ohio State's Top Ten season didn't even do as well in 2003-2004 at juco as Lance did in 2005-2006.

I wish the kid well wherever he goes.

He must have improved his defense because it wasn't his offensive skills that kept him on the bench.

Jucojunction has a front page story on Lance this afternoon. They have learned about Indiana's interest in him--

It is a subscription article, but here is part of what his coach says about his recruitment--
"He's already visited Nebraska and he will take three others in the next week or so," Harrington said. "He will visit St. Louis U, Marquette and Indiana."

The Marquette visit will come after this weekend's NJCAA all-star game at Kilgore College in Texas. Next week, Stemler will commute on an official visit to SLU. With the campus only about 15 minutes from Southwestern Illinois, Stemler will go to class during the day and check out the Billiken program after his schedule is complete. He'll then head to Indiana next Thursday through Saturday.

"He'd like to take three or four days after that," Harrington said. "If he's not happy with those four, then Minnesota called last week three or four times and he would look at Minnesota, but he's not going to take five trips right now."

                    I hope Lance considers this--
Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan plans to attend Oklahoma's NCAA hearing in Park City, Utah, and could testify before the committee on infractions Friday.

New Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson could face NCAA sanctions for the 550+ illegal phone calls he now admits to making. The NCAA has set a precedent with the Ohio State case that the offending coach could be penalized at his new school. That could mean Indiana could face sanctions for the next year or 2.

There is a new article and interview with Lance on scout/insiders this morning as well, and it adds a couple other schools to the list that want Lance.

                      Nebraska
                      Marquette
                      Indiana
                      Wyoming
                      Minnesota
                      St Louis
                      George Washington

"Marquette Head Coach Tom Crean, who scouted Stemler last month at the NJCAA Tournament, was in Belleville last night to make an in-school presentation to Lance and his parents.

Stemler took his first official visit to Nebraska (Apr 13-15) late last week.

Stemler is slated to participate in a JUCO All-Star game this weekend down at Kilgore College in Texas. Following that game, Stemler will take a whirlwind of visits, starting with a trip to Marquette (Apr. 23-25).

Campo said that Stemler will then visit nearby Saint Louis University (Apr. 26-27) and Indiana (Apr. 28-29) before arriving at a decision. Minnesota, George Washington and Wyoming are in the mix should Stemler opt to take a fifth official visit.

"Indiana watched him work out on Tuesday, and they loved him," Campo said. "They said they need a shooting four man, because with that big kid they have, they want to be able to spread the floor on people."

This is the reason why I think Sampson was a terrible hire for Indiana. They probably could have got just about any coach they wanted, but I doubt the sanctions will be much of anything. Probation. If that.
