  • Quotes from Les in today's PJ Star

I've got to say...the quotes from Les in today's paper are really disheartening to me...

"We did some very good things against Wichita State for a majority of the game"?
Really? Did he watch tape of the same game that I sat through? What exactly were all of these "very good things" that BU did for "a majority of the game"??? BU allowed one of the most offensively challenged teams in the Valley shoot 64% from the field for the game...I don't know how any coach could look at that performance and come away with a positive assessment like that...this is borderline delusional to me...We hit some shots here and there, so what?...I don't know how that can be spun into "we did some very good things for a majority of them game".

"We had a 12 minute breakdown and good teams will take advantage of that"
...umm, news flash, WSU is NOT a very good team...especially with their point guard out. Yes...They took advantage of us, but they are not a good team.

"We're not making any wholesale changes or making any drastic changes in philosophy."
OK, so you are going to trot out the same 7 man rotation that has been a disaster for three games now...you're going to continue to get destroyed on the boards and jack up threes and hope for the best...great news!!!...I'm really looking forward to it.

"I'm encouraged by the continuing good attitude and approach to practice."
Well, I'm discouraged by the continued lousy approach they show us in the games. Stop talking about how great this team is in practice...it's getting old...How about you challenge your kids to start bringing that same effort and approach from practice into the games...?

Quotes like these really don't give me much confidence that any of these deficiencies that we have seen from this team are actually going to get addressed...These are the kind of quotes a coach makes when a team is 14-2 and just happened to have an off night which stopped their 9 game winning streak...not a team that has lost 5 in a row, and shows glaring, glaring weaknesses in numerous aspects of the game....

Don't you think this would be the time for our head coach to say something like, "our effort defensively and on the boards over the past few games has simply been unacceptable...We have worked on it and make it a point of emphasis in practice and I have let every guy on this team know that it is up to them to show me improvement in those areas, first and foremost...and if they can't get it done we've got 11 scholarship players on this team and I'm going to put every one of them in there until we find the combination of guys that is willing to make the sacrifices to get this right....pure and simple.'

I'm not asking Les to come out and say 'our team stinks'...or 'player A and player B are really terrible right now'...I just want him to acknowledge that there are areas of the game that this team really needs to address, and the coaching staff is going to do everything they can to make sure that those areas become priorities in practice and in the games as we go forward....

I have to agree on your points. Although I am sure (or I hope) Coach Les is trying to find some positives to speak about. However, if he truly believes this and doesn't make any changes, then we will probably see the same thing we've seen the past few games - an average team struggling to win games.

I'm sorry ER but I've gotta agree with Les. This team did play very well for half the game against both MSU and WSU. Unfortunately, either the coaches or the players failed to make the necessary adjustments at halftime and completely fell apart in the second half.

If Les can get the team to "bring it" for a full game (like against Mich. St. for 37 minutes) they will "right their wrongs". I've gotta think that it's a young team unable to adjust and not a poor coach who is unable/unwilling to make adjustments. Les has already proven to me that he knows how to coach. Now, these young players have gotta learn how to win.

I think (and hope) that the staff has been working on some of these little things in practice and that we'll see some results soon -- Starting with SIU tonight.

We have to take a lot of 3's or we can watch our big men miss layups which do you want?

That eight-point halftime lead against WSU was a little deceiving to me. Wichita turned the ball over 17 times in the first half and we had 21 more shots than them at halftime. We should have led that game by double-digits easily. I had a bad feeling when Herzog read those at halftime.

Please don't take any stuff you read from these kind of media interviews seriously. It's just coach-talk.

Nobody wants to win more than Jim Les, and there are reasons he plays the rotation he does, that are not always made public.

ER3, I have to side with Les on this one for the most part as well. Why should JL hit this team over the head publicly especially to the PJS?

I agree with you that changes should be made to our lineup and have stated that here numerous times...

We have several quotes on this thread, but in all fairness the last 3 sentences were left out. I think that these three sentences are very important.

JL quote from the same article:

"We have a lot of guys going through this for the first time. Obviously, it will help to get over the hump psychologically." Les said the breakdown caused him to question whether his starters, four of whom played 31 or more minutes, needed more first-half rest. "Whether that means going further into the bench or not, I haven't decided," he said.

We will see tonight, but this give me hope that we will see more of a rotation tonight instead of what we have had with previous games.

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

As I said...I'm not looking for Les to single out his players or throw them under the bus collectively...

I guess it just has been painfully obvious to me and most of the rest of this team's fan base that this team has been playing horrible defense, has rebounded horribly, and really has shown no progress in those areas over the last three games...
It would just seem to me this would be the perfect opportunity for the head coach to give a different kind of 'coach speak' to the fan base...basically saying "The way we have performed defensively and on the boards over the last few games is not something that we can allow to continue to happen...we've concentrated on those areas in practice...I've been pleased with the progress...and I firmly believe that we will start to see the fruits of all the kids' hard work on these aspects of the game over the rest of the season"...
I guess it's just a matter of personal preference, but that is the kind of political, coach speak that I would prefer to hear when we are in the middle of a 5 game losing streak...rather than 'we do some things well...we practice really well...we'll just keep doing what we do...and hope things magically get better...'

Les is doing what he can with what he's got. The only I have is...wtf DC? But yea, when you only have toothpicks and paste to build a bridge...

I agree with you ER3...that is exactly what Les should say to the media. The idea that Jim has reasons for the rotation he plays doesn't hold any weight with me anymore. The time and right to that philosophy has passed. It's now time to save the season. We are looking at 0-6 square in the face...no more passive positivity! Get results!

The time to right the ship was Saturday against a bad and hurting Wichita State team.

Not only will the Dawgs be out for blood (after losing to ISU) but they already smell it in town. Think about a neighborhood dog that's been kicked a few times and has just gotten a bone to eat, returning home to the alley. Now a weak, limping poodle strolls into the alley ... looking for its first food in a week ...

                        *insert fight sequence*

                        Can we take the bone?

That analogy could apply to either team-- #1 vs. #2. Should be quite a game
