Crouch could just maybe be the sixth man off the bench to give this team some instant offense. Right now they are not getting this from anyone. It would also take some of the pressure off him, and with fresh legs I think he might have a better chance to "light things up"

Sure, Eric Coleman did come off the bench against us, in a move that totally took me by surprise as I have not followed UNI at all this year. He then played 27 minutes, more than any other UNI post player.

Just take my word for it, Crouch is not mailing it in. Has his defense been subpar at times? Sure. It has never been a great strong point of his. But the fact that the entire teams defense is just plain awful has done nothing but magnify it. I'd wager that his defense on and off the ball is no worse than last season, he just doesn't have the help that he had last year. I've said this so many times around friends and family that I feel like a broken record: this team misses J.J. Tauai more than they ever imagined they would. Talk about a guy who can single handedly make 4 other players look like they're playing good D...

His turnovers have been up slightly but I wouldn't say that alot of them were lazy passes. Last night he realistically only had 2 turnovers as the 3rd was a pass that would have hit someone in the front row if he hadn't tried to save it and it got intercepted.

Coleman has been coming off the bench for quite a while now. I am not saying JC needs to be relegated to mop-up duty again, not at all. I just think that our lineup needs an overhaul, and the team and JC may both benefit by him coming off the bench.

          Changes? Yes.

          Overhaul? No.

Me and a close friend of mine, who usually attend most BU home games and sit near the top of the arena in order to better view the entire court, are pretty knowledgable about basketball and really have no idea what is going on with the substitution pattern. If anything, JL (or Little Bisch, since he is in charge of substitutions) needs to be more consistent with his rotations. Playing some players 25+ minutes some games and 0 minutes the next game does nothing but shatter confidence and sometimes can pit players against coaches. By this point in the season, the roles of these players should be defined. JL needs to pick an 8-9 man rotation and stick with it. Before every game I wonder who is in JL's "doghouse" for the night.

Great point about the possibility this team really misses JJ's contributions...

They certainly miss his toughness, both mentally and physically. This team has neither one.

For those of you critical of JC's passing/turnovers, it should be pointed out that he did have 9 assists vs Witchita. He would have had several more if our bigs were better at finishing. He looks to get the ball inside more than any other player, and that includes Ruff. As far as his defense is concerned, he is by far our best off ball defender and leads us in steals after Ruff. He's holding his own defensively, in my opinion.
He is playing too many minutes, but I don't think we have any choice.

If has not been publicized, but JC has also been dealing with an injury that has affected his shooting. This is not the shoulder injury that he had surgery on last spring.

Not only his shooting, but his ball handling and passing as well. Any pain where he has it can affect several of aspects of his game, but he's still playing 35+ minutes a game and giving it his all.

JC's and AW's points production has actually been good the last 2 games. If we added that production during a few of our earlier losses we would of had more W's...

I would agree on AW. One of the few positives of this disastrous stretch is that AW seems to be getting more aggressive offensively. I like the thought of he and Sammy together in the backcourt for 2 more seasons.

That is not a good situation to be in....let's get some others involved and make them feel like part of the team and not worry about making 1 mistake......getting yanked and a lecture on the sidelines.....this is not good for a confidence booster! Yell at the guys during practice...pat them on their rears or give them five during the game on the way to the bench....you will get more effort from a guy not playing affraid to make an error! Time to become a TEAM........this includes the coach's.....you win and lose together! BOOK IT!
I've been trying to put my finger on what is ailing this team (besides the obvious.....lack of defense and rebounding, too many 3-pt shots, no inside game), and I think Big Mike has hit on something.

I think most of the team is tired of getting yanked and yelled at every time they make a mistake. I've noticed that many of the post-substitution conversations appear to be overly critical and animated, as if JL is frustrated with just about everyone on the team. I'm not saying the team isn't listening.....but it's got to be frustrating to be criticized every time you leave the court and return to the bench. It would make me (as a player) play somewhat tentatively on both ends of the court.

Not every team (or even every player) responds positively to the same type of motivation. Perhaps JL needs to criticize performance more in practice and less in the game. The defensive meltdowns seem to happen in bunches, as if all the players lose their focus simultaneously. It's almost eerie how quickly the game gets out of hand.....especially the last 2 and the VCU game.

Altman has used a 8-9 maybe even 10 man rotation for years. No matter how bad a player may be playing they see the court. He keps guys involved, fresh and motivated. I rarely see the guy embarass or chew a player out whe they come out.

I have NEVER liked yanking a player right after a mistake. Mo used to do that to his whipping boy Deon Jackson. I have never seen a players confidence crushed so much like his was.

To me, Egolf, Austin, Collins are not single answers but minutes are needed from all these guys IMO.

Well, I was in favor of shortening the bench because I didn't think certain players were giving us anything and didn't see the point of them playing. That happened and the results were the same, if not worse than before. I think we're at the point where there aren't any concrete answers, only questions that keep getting bigger and bigger every game.
