  • Salley

I listen/watch/go to all of the games, but I am not a basketball expert by any means.

Can anyone explain to me why Salley gets the minutes he does? I know he is a Co-Captain, and a senior. He has done nothing to impress me at all this season.

Fair enough- but answer me this- WHo has impressed you so much that they deserve his time? He gives you 6 pts and 6 boards a game and was never meant to be an offensive threat..

Collins is inconsistent, AUstin just now rounding into shape and SS can only go limited minutes IMO.. so who gets his muntes and can BU afford to give up 6 & 6 a game?
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

Sam S. has looked really good tonight, and if he keeps it up, I see no reason for him to be on the bench.

Here are the numbers of the two posts tonight.

              Salley- 2-2 shooting, 3-4 ft, 7 points, 11 rebounds.

              Singh- 2-2 shooting, 5-8 ft, 9 points, 4 boards, and 2 blocks

They only got 42 combined minutes.

I think a bigger problem is the production of Wilson and Scott. 3-13 shooting, 13 points, 5 boards.

              They played 44 minutes combined.

Wilson also had 2 fouls for most of the 1st half and had 3 at the half so he couldn't be to aggressive on the D tonight. Then TCS is well TCS, speedy but not much else. But Wilson has been the key player almost all season so can't fault him for a couple bad games.

I was going to start a new thread, but since we have a "big" thread going..

Jim Les and the staff was lauded last year because they adjusted the playing style to match the players.

This year the playing style has not adjusted to enhance the strengths of our bigs. We do not have a hyper-athletic Zach, who could make up for being away from the basket in a single step, or a big that is as overall good as POB (with shot-blocking that covered for guards over extending to get a steal..)

Our current bigs are being punished because they are not Zach or POB.

                  What If......
Knowing about the current ability of our bigs, what if we had to start a new season with only 3 guards. (Last year we only had 3 bigs)

What, then, would Jim do differently to make this team more competitive with out current bigs playing a bigger role?
Could he devise offensive schemes where 2 bigs stayed in rebounding position? Would there be more bigs screening for back side scoring, since we do not have a true back to the basket player?
Would we run different zones or D schemes to be better covered?

T C-S should have never cut his hair at the beginning of the season, it was all down hill from there.

Almost everybody (including me) has been down on Matt wondering if somebody else should be getting some of his minutes. He is not scoring well and his hands are suspect but...We have been getting killed on the boards and he is the only one giving us a bunch of boards over the last few games. In the last 4 games 11, 7, 7, 12 rebounds. He and Theron lead the team in rebounding at 6.4 per game but Theron was much stronger early and has fallen off. Matt will continue to get a bunch of minutes.

Matt gives 100% when in the game. That's all we can ask. Maybe some of his relation should post, so we can give him some love also.

Agree Houston... Like it or not everyone, MS is the best we have for our bigs.. As stated earlier, I think we should go with the big lineup of MS and DC as our 4 and 5 starters...

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

Salley isn't flashy by any stretch, but you know what you're getting from him every game (and not in a bad way), which is more than you can say about the other bigs we have. He doesn't make glaring defensive mistakes like DC and is more athletic and mobile than Singh. People should know what they get from him by now. I don't see what all the fuss is about.

But would the coachins staff be willing to change their system to play to our Big's strenghts while minimizing their weaknesses?

Together, MS and DC would make for better overall presence on O and D, but they would be giving up some of the guard oriented schemes.
MS or RA could continue to play strong on-on one D with the oppositions best big man, and DC or SS could stay down low with larger wingspans detering driving in with shot blocking. That would help out the guards, as they could gamble more trying to get steals

On O, MS could screen for DC to get him open right under the basket for inside points, then the opposition would have to respect our interior game and not overplay the guards and driving lanes.

I am more thinking that it could work, but the coaches (must like last year) have to change to play to our strengths.

Think about our guards. JC is not the nation's greatest shot creator. He is not the nation's greatest ball handler. He is not the nation's quickest one-on-one defender. But the coaching staff was willing to change the system to allow him to be the nation's leading 3 point shooter. They allow him to use his length on D to create steals in the passing lanes. The coaching staff allowed JC to become a great player by playing to his strengths.
