Alex Thompson- another sophomore, from Ames, Iowa, has also been released from his scholarship by Steve Alford.

In an unusual move, Alford is also dumping 2 of his assistants-
"Alford also announced that assistant coach Greg Lansing and director of basketball operations Rich Walker will not be given contract extensions."

but the news on Mason Stewart is very disturbing.
He must be getting forced out by the new UNI coach because I cannot imagine he is leaving on his own volition given the consequences.
Stewart is a fine kid, good player, who could well have been a top Valley player had he been given the chance.
He decided to redshirt because of the glut of upper class guards at UNI (Jacobson, Crawford, etc.) who would be getting all the minutes.
Then when Crawford went down, the kid might have gotten some playing time except he had already made the decision to redshirt.
If he transfers now to another D-I, he will lose the year entirely, as he has already sat out one year.
this is the kind of year he will NOT get back from the NCAA as a 6th year because there was no injury involved, just a voluntary decision to redshirt.
Tough loss for Stewart.
He now has only one option, as DeAaron Williams did, he has to go to junior college.

Could I get some clarification on this, I thought that since he did not play at all last years (because of his redshirt) that he could transfer to another DI and play right away. I thought that you only have to sit out a year when you play.

No, redshirting does not make any difference. If you we're on the roster at any Div I school, then you have to miss 2 full semesters before you can be eligible at another Div I.

That is exactly what happened to Cellus. He left Iowa after his redshirt freshman year. He transferred and played at a juco because he would have had to sit out another year at Bradley if he had transferred here right away.

DeAaron Williams graduated from high school in June of 2004 (same time as Shaun Livingston) and redshirted the entire year of 2004-2005 at Wisconsin.

So 2005-2006 was DeAaron's freshman season at Wisconsin and he cannot take this year as a redshirt year for two reasons.
First is that he already took a redshirt year in '04-'05, second is because he played in 8 games in 05-06, thus disqualifying him from taking a redshirt year even if he wanted to for medical reasons.

So, when DeAaron left Wisconsin, he last played in the game on 12/28/05 against Louisiana Tech, so that means he could be eligible to play D-I ball at any other institution by the end of their first semester, possibly as early as before Christmas.

If he enrolls in junior college in the falle, then he'd have to finish that season at juco before being eligible at D-I.

Northern Iowa transfer Mason Stewart will transfer to Southwestern Illinois CC. That's the school Lance Stemler and Marcellus Sommerville went to. Because Stewart redshirted last season, he will spend 1 year at SWICC and then have 3 years of eligibility left.

I notice a couple interesting names-
Does anyone else remember Japhet McNeil? He was one of Jim Les first big national recruiting targets, but ended up at Eastern Carolina. He has played 3 years, but is now transferring. There are a couple other kids Bradley recruited at one time.

Some Big 10 players do well when they step down to a conference like the MVC. Marcellus Sommerville, another Iowa transfer, was All MVC and was the leading scorer and rebounder at Bradley his sophomore year . But yet another Iowa transfer, Ben Rand, was a disappointment at an even lower level of play at Northern Illinois this past season. He averaged only 7.7 points (tied for 5th on the team).

With all the talented shooting guards at UNI, I wonder how much Reed will play.
Kyle Wilson is another Big 10 transfer who has been a very good player, though not a dominating star. Can anyone else remember a Big 10 transfer who had a very good career in the Valley?

Kyle WIlson at Witchita is not having a bad one and will be a key cog in their wheel in 2006/2007.

Pekin native and former Northwestern player, Matt Moran had a few good games for Bradley before succumbing to his bad knees!
