The beat writer for the Evansville Courier-Press blogs about the Evansville Aces team that many picked last in the MVC. They are at .500 going into the MVC season (5-5), and have won 4 of the last 5.
He sounds a little too much like a kool-aid drinking fan (like us!) instead of an objective writer.
Yes, they are at .500, but here is the down side--
One of their wins is against a Div 2 school, Oakland City, so they are actually just 4-5 against Div 1.
Evansville's RPI is 246, almost 50 slots lower than the next worst team (Indiana State is 198 ).
Their Strength of Schedule is ranked #264, one of the worst SOS any MVC team has had in recent years.
Their 4 D1 wins have been against teams with an average RPI of 241 and a combined record of 10-33.
And here are a few statements in the article that are a little overly optimistic and I'm not sure many will agree with--
>>These Aces will not finish last in the MVC as predicted. They are getting better and getting well, all at the same time. (!)
>>Victor Gomez, coming off a broken foot, saw his first action of what promised to be a breakout senior season and there's no reason to believe that's still not the case. (note: Victor Gomez averaged 1.1 ppg and 0.9 rpg. as a junior. How much more production can he give in this breakout season, especially as he is recovering from a broken foot?)
>>Simmons will make Evansville a winner again after seven straight losing seasons, the only question is when. (hope so :-|)
>>Don't rule out this season. (He would deserve Coach of the Year if that happens).
