Understand that I recognize that BU didn't play well yesterday and this post isn't really going to address that. Normally Bradley is a man to man defensive team and that is what the calling card needs to be. And let's face it, BU didn't play well man to man defense last night and have had lapses.
My issue is with the lack of better zone defense. Last year, we played a very aggressive 2-3 zone. The guards attacked and JC and JJ held their own getting out on shooters at the forward positions. Did we get beat on the boards a lot? Yes - no doubt. But we still were aggressive and even caused some turnovers.
Now this year, the 2-3 zone isn't our change-up defense, we've moved to a 1-3-1. Is it because we may have more height? In any case, this is the most unorganized 1-3-1 I've ever seen. It almost looks like the guys are each playing a different defense. We allow too much penetration and then give up open shots as well.
Why can't we go back to a good 2-3 zone? We'll need it at a minimum vs. SIU. if we play this 1-3-1 vs. SIU, even they will score a lot of points.
Like I said, this isn't our biggest problem. But I would hope we can teach multiple zone defenses and not just one single zone. And hopefully most of our players have played zone sometime in their high school careers.
