I was just wondering after last week's discussion of Valley Tourney tickets, how many posters go to St. Louis every year?

    Where do you stay?

What are some places around Scottstrade you eat at?

We usually try to stay within walking distance of Scotttrade.

We have stayed at the Drury Inn Union Station, but that is very hard to get into. We are staying at the Hampton on Market Street this year as last. Free parking, breakfast, etc. and lots of Valley fans there and a decent bar in the hotel called "Syborgs" with good St. Louis style pizza and Karoke on one of the nights. You have to walk a little farther across the overpass which can be a little chily some nights. We still like to stay near Union Station rather than downtown near the ball park. Although some of the new restaurants and such down there will certainly change things this year.

We usually hang out at Maggie O'Briens next to Union Station good bar for bar people and sit down restaurant if you want to do that. We have had some really good times in the bar with the other Valley fans and the occasional MVC official if you can believe that.

Last year we spent one of the nights with some friends from St. Louis down in the Soulard district. Incredible pizza at Joanie's and a great authentic Irish bar with live music at a place called McGurk's. Last year the Guiness brewmaster was there, awesome.

We have never missed an MVC tourney so we have had a lot of fun times as things have changed over the years. Planning a fun time at the tournament is certainly different now that in was a few years ago.

Thanks alot for starting what I am sure will be a fun thread to readf

I usually go with several other posters and some other friends each year. We have stayed several places over the years, but have stayed at the Hampton the last 2-3 years. It is a easy walk to Union St. and the games. We have enjoyed Maggies over the years, maybe a little too much last year! The bar at the Hamptons does have pretty good food as well.

Not even Christmas yet and you already got me wishing for early March!!
Some see a hopeless end, while others see an endless hope.

I recommend The Big Bang as well, I believe it's on The Landing somewhere? It's a dueling piano bar that was filled with fans of all the teams last year which made for a really good atmosphere.

It was a long day after the SIU game last year. I was stuffed with Joanie's pizza and had a hard time getting the "party restarted" if you know what I mean. But, somehow I found a way!

I'm an alum from Peoria who has lived in St. Louis the past 13 plus years, so I would be happy to answer any questions or make suggestions. The following is the St. Louis visitors site:

Resources for travelers, with St. Louis maps, passes, way finding information and assistance for those who are differently-abled.

                Also for restaurants:
Sauce Magazine is the premier culinary lifestyle authority for St. Louis and surrounding areas.

                Hotels
The closest hotels are (in order):
Sheraton St. Louis City Center Hotel & Suites (across from the arena)
Hyatt Regency St. Louis (3 large city blocks from the arena)
Drury Inn Union Station (3 large city blocks from the arena)
Hampton Inn Union Station (a moderate to long walk west, on Market)

Others downtown or within longer wlaking distance (as in getting some exercise):
The Roberts Mayfair, A Wyndham Historic Hotel (nice boutique hotel)
The Omni Majestic Hotel (nice boutique hotel, sporting teams have stayed here through the years)
Renaissance St. Louis Grand & Suites Hotel (near the Dome, and a convention hotel remodeled and added to by the City)
The Westin St. Louis (nice, has bars, restaurants, near Busch Stadium)
                Drury Plaza Hotel
Drury Inn & Suites St. Louis Convention Center (near the Dome)
Crowne Plaza Hotel St. Louis DowntownCourtyard by Marriott - St. Louis Downtown (near Busch Stadium)
Adam's Mark Hotel (near the Arch, great for conventions and has a restaurant and bar that folks who aren't even hotek guests will go to sometimes)

                Special mention(s):
Four Seasons--the hotel should be open in time, but they knocked down about half the Landing and used the parking lot across from the Dome to put up one, swank, large, on-land casino that has restaraunts, gaming, hotel rooms, and condos all in one setting.

Hotel Lumiere--several million whet in to redoing the former Embassy Suites on the Landing, which is going to be aprt of the Muiere Casino complex as well.

                Restaurants/Bars
                Union Station

Soulard-MCGurk's (already covered), Joanie's Pizza, Johnny's (jazz, and, ahem, well Sould waitresses the last few years tend to dress in ways that would put Hooter's to shame, and this place has been it--real great food, though), 1860's, Hardshell Cafe, Venice Cafe

Washington Avenue--Fifteen (Jimmy Edmond's bar--but hes leaving so who knows, Copia, 10 Stree Italian (I love this place--a great chef with real Italian food, but at Avanti's prices), Mosaic, Kitchen K Bar & Restaurant

The Landing--this is turning over so much now and half of it's gone, so I am not sure what else is still there other than the Spaghetti Factory

The Hill and Watson Road: LoRusso's Cucina (best Italian I know), Cunetto's (no reservations, ridiculous wait for weekend dinner times), Adrianna's (only open for extebded lunch hours, but great sandwiches, pizza, and her specialty is pasta pie--she was even on the Food Channel with Mario Batalli), Zia's good, affordable all-around Italian like Cunetto's, but not even close to the wait); Charlie Gitto's (very good, a haunt of Yoggi Berra and Joe Garagiola), Anthonino's (nice small Greek bar and restaruant--the owner may even chat you up) I can go on, but ask me if you need more for the Hill

                Downtown
Charlie Gitto's Donwtown, Pino's Pizza, Dooley's (an Irish style pub with the best burgers and Philly Cheeseteak sandwich, and a local institution, but is closing St. Patricks Day due to being forced out for redevelopment of the building), Maggie O'Brien's (covered), Al Hrabosky's Ballpark Saloon, J Bucks (bar and restaurant), Mike Shannon's

Grand Center (west on Market at Grand)
The Bistro (as "Jazz At the Bistro", nice place bar and restaurant that has jazz concerts there, especially name acts in the winter time); Gary's (a nice bar and grill)

                Dogtown
Chuy Arzola's (the best Tex-Mex in the City, and cheap prices), Seamus McDaniel's (it is like a smaller version of McGurk's, minus the great Irish music), Olympia (Greek place on McCausland)

Wesport (out in West County off of I-270, but some may want to go there due to the athlete's palces)
5 (Albert Pujols's place), Ozzie's (Ozzie Smith's Place), Funny Bone Comedy Club

                Things to do:
                Lumiere Casino, etc.
                President Casino
(there are several other casinos in the metro, too--East St. Louis Casino Queen, Harrah's at Westport, Casino St. Charles, Alton Belle)
Arch (duh, I know--but it took me about 6 years of living down here before I went)
Anheuser-Bush Brewery Tour (maybe another "duh" for some )
Grant's Farm (not sure if it's open that early in the year)
                St. Lous Zoo
                St. Louis Art museum
City Museum (downtown place that is less a museum and more of interactive modern art for kids--for lack of better words, you'd have to see it/view their website)
The Hill (Italian restaraunts, bakeries, and groceries)
The St. Louis Galleria (mall for shopping), and general vicinity has many stores
Cherokee Street Antique row (nice litle antinque shops near the brewery, but pretty close to bad neighborhoods)

*Major note: Interstate 64 (also known as "40" by locals since it is also a designated as a route) will be closed from I-170 to just shy of I-270 for a major rebuild for several months starting January 1.

Has anything replaced Hooters in Union Station?

I was very unhappy to see that it had closed. that was the perfect place to stop after tourney games, or in-between sessions.

BBQ Station replaced it there, but it relocated to near Kiener Plaza on Chesnut. That strip along Kiener, a couple blocks away from Busch, as turned over the past couple years. It is where Mike Shannon's used to be. I have edited my list to include Shannon's which is across from Busch.

You completely left out CWE! Bar Louie is good there (similar to the one in Ptown) as well as a lot of other good bars/restraunts in and around Maryland Square. Rosie's on Laclede is good for strong cheap drinks (maybe stronger than Jimmy's).

The landing is REALLY fun that weekend. If you come here to drink after the games, the landing is the best place to go IMO. My fav place there is Morgan Street. I typically stay away from the Landing on normal weekends though. It's an out-of-towner place IMO.

Soulard also has Big Daddy's, which I like better than McGurk's (not that McGurk's is bad).

Downtown has a lot of good places to eat now too. I haven't eaten at a bad place on Washington Ave yet. The Dubliner is good for Irish food.

If you stay in the suburbs, then just eat whatever you would at home because they are all the same. Also-you are boring if you stay there.

Thanks for covering the Central West End. I had left that out because, other than Wesport and the sports bars, I was trying to steer folks closer, but I jst kept adding more, and since I covered The Hill and Dogtown, the Central West End is just as close if you can get to the other two. Morgan Street on the landing is a good place--it's been about three years since I was there last, but they have a mix of atmospeheres in that they always had the multiple areas--restaurant, bar game area, bar, and last I knew they had a dance club place in the back across the beer garden.

Caleco"s downtown is a great place to eat and stays open fairly late; if you have time to go to the hill it is worth the trip and Ozzies out at westport plaza has great food and is a very neat place to see; the landing is great to bar hop but I would not recommend it as far as eating as their are not many places there that serves food ; the Big Bang is a fun place to go ; I am staying at the Hampton so I do not have to drive to the games as some of the downtown hotels have valet parking only and it takes forever to get your car when you need it.

We go every year. We are too poor to stay in the downtown area, so we generally stay in the areas west of the city or even on the illinois side...we like the Cheshire Lodge. Usually travel down with my retired parents, possibly taking one of our small kids with us. Our favorite places are the zoo, and the city museum....but for me it's all about the basketball. If the wives get tired of it, my dad and I usually steal away for the late night sessions. He and I started going down for the saturday sessions back in the mid nineties, and have made it every year since. Highlights I can remember: Beating Wichita in 05/06 semifinal and thinking "I could get used to this!", and beating ISU in the semifinal a few years priorr. Lowlights: James Gillingham's head injury and season ending game, losing to ISU on thursday.
