  • Dave Reynolds article 12/6

There is an article in today's PJ Star sports section by Dave Reynolds that addresses playing time.
Unfortunately, the PJ Star site is down, and does not have any recent articles posted--

Jim Les is interviewed and credits Sam Maniscalco's work in practice and his aggressiveness on defense for his increased playing time. He says Andrew Warren's lack of aggressiveness is why he's playing less. And Les attributes David Collins' missed defensive assignments for his lack of playing time in the second half Tuesday. He also says Rashad Austin and Tyrone Cole-Scott need to continue to improve to get more playing time.

I agree. It means Jim is seeing the same things we are in regards to AW's ineffectiveness. Hopefully this isn't season-long, similar to JC's sophomore slump.

Different "slumps" IMO.....while both maybe or were mental JC's was a pure shooting slump. Warrens seems to be a lack of agressivness.

Warren has been lacking aggressivness since he has been here.

Sounds like if Austin really continues to stay positive and works hard in practice he will be given his opportunity. I think the quote from JL is very encouraging regarding Austin, but with anything time will tell.

I think so too and hopefully he will be a key part of winning the Valley this season!

I too hope Austin is working hard and eventually can contribute this year. I just hope, kinda like the backup QB syndrome in football, that fans aren't thinking he's the answer to our rebounding shortcomings.

While Rashad is big he isn't THAT big. He's NOT bigger than Salley or Sam who were not as big as the MSU or Vanderbilt guys.

Austin is 6'7 but probably closer to 6'6 as I stood next to him in South Padre.

NOT saying I don't want him out there and I'm certainly not saying he can't/wouldn't help....I'm just sayin.

Isnt a big part of rebounding wanting to rebound, along with putting a body on someone and not afraid of being physical. We have a couple of guys ie Egolf and Collins who dont seem to be real big on the physical or wanting side of rebounding. Size is good to get some rebounds but desire and aggresiveness are essential when size is the same on both sides.

JL is at some point this season going to have to play those who want to be physical and go get the basketball. We can not play 3 guards, Wilson and Salley and expect to compete phycially under the boards.

I really dont care who it is that steps up, but Collins and Egolf have been given their opportunity and its obvious JL does not trust either, seems that its got to be about time to unleash Austin see what he brings. If he fails then we probably will end up being stuck with Salley, some Singh and occasional Collins, until or if Collins ever gets a fire in him to be aggressive and intelligent on the court.

yeah but whereas Salley and Collins are tall and lanky, Austin is more of a wide body... We need someone like that.. Not saying Austin is the answer, but we could certainly use his him if he is anywhere near ready.

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™
