  • 2 MVC games Thursday 11/29

Wichita State (3-2) plays at Appalachian State (3-3) at 6:00 pm CST.
Appalachian State was Wichita State's opponent last February in the Bracket Buster. The Shockers lost at home to them 60-58.

The other game is Savannah State (5-4) plays at Creighton (3-0) at 7:05 pm CST.

Wichita wins 62-53. At least that's what yahoo says now. I'm a little wary of it because a few minutes ago when I checked it, it said they were down by 3 with 8 seconds to go...

The Wichita State score is correct, the Shockers have won 62-53.

Creighton is up on Savannah State 47-28 at the half.

And one more relevant score....especially for dogsrus..........

Larry Eustachy's Southern Miss Golden Eagles have a very slight 56-32 lead
at halftime over NAIA "juggernaut" Blue Mountain College!!
This game has been a real battle, given the strength of the schedule Southern Miss has been facing.

By the way... Blue Mountain College (The Toppers), a really tiny NAIA school that just started a basketball program 3 years ago, and has NO seniors and only one player over 6" 4", probably won't try to get into any fights with Southern Miss' coach Larry Eustachy, as they have heard the widely reported story of Eustachy's prowess in the art of fisticuffs...as witnessed by one of our own!!

VCU went down tonight at Hampton 64-55 (Merf's old stomping grounds). Wonder how all-world EM did.

Looks like Eric Maynor had a good game-- 22 points, 4 assists, but 7 turnovers.

In another game involving 2 Colonial teams in their opening conference game (it seems awfully early to start conference games!), George Mason massacred a pretty good Drexel team by an unbelieveable score of 85-38.
Both teams came into the game 5-1. Drexel's next game is at home against Creighton on Saturday, in the return game from last year's Bracketbuster win in Omaha.
Drexel, which had been one of the better shooting teams in the country, shot only 30% for the game and 16.7% from 3.

1 other non-MVC game involving a former BU recruit, Kansas State lost a close one in overtime to Oregon 80-77.

Andre Gilbert had a very good game for Kansas State and helped keep them in the game with his outside shooting. Kansas State is a very athletic team that lacks shooters. Gilbert has emerged as one of the more reliable outside shooters, and he scored 16 points to go along with the 24 points of future #1 draft pick Michael Beasley.

Unfortunately, Andre Gilbert will be rememebred as the goat in this game. With 5.5 second left in overtime, and Oregon ahead by 3 points after a free throw, the Kansas State guard ran the ball up the court, and passed to Gilbert for a final shot to try for a tie and another OT. But Gilbert got a brain cramp and drove to the basket undefended (Oregon knew a 2 pointer wouldn't beat them). He stopped before shooting and turned and passed back out to the guard, but time expired before a shot could be taken. In the spirit of good teammate support (), several of the Kansas State players including Beasley came over to Gilbert, pointed to the scoreboard, and derided him for his mistake, as if it was the only thing that cost them the game.

In another related game, Vanderbilt was taken to double overtime by a good South Alabama team, but was able to pull it out 91-88. Looks like Vandy had a bit of a South Padre hangover like the Braves. Thankfully for us and them, they pulled it out. If Vandy can knock off Georgia Tech on Saturday, they should crack next week's top 25.

Beasley had no room to talk after tonights loss, he flat out blew a few FT's with 2 minutes left and had himself a chance to tie the game on a three with 10 seconds left. Granted a player should certainly know the score and time left but one play doesn't lose a game.

Here is another bit of news from Vanderbilt. They are approaching 10,000 season tickets this year.

Here's a couple stats from the Creighton-Savannah State game,
in which Creighton won easily 78-52!!--

The starters scored only 18 points, on only SEVEN BASKETS!!!!
                            The bench scored 60 points!!
12 different players scored, and only one scored more than 10 points.
Creighton had only 12 assists on 26 baskets, and Creighton tied an all time school record with 18 steals in the game.

And in the Southern Miss win over "Blue Mountain"....
the final score was 112-75, but it was even more of a blowout than that as So. Miss had a 46 point lead
as they played their starters until the 4 minute mark!!! In fact, 3 of the So. Miss starters played considerably MORE minutes in this nearly 50-point blowout than any of the Blue Mountain starters and some played more minutes than they played in the close game against Alabama last Saturday....

So just why was Larry Eustachy so bent on destroying this tiny, overmatched NAIA opponent??
I have no clue....but after the easy blowout against a team that might have had a hard time even beating some decent high school teams.....So.Miss' height advantage led to them outscoring Blue Mountian 78-19 in the paint!!!
here is what Larry Eustachy said......
"(Blue Mountain) played very hard," said Southern Miss head coach Larry Eustachy. "It was a good challenge trying to get by them. They pressed us, and we didn't handle them very well. It was a great game for us."

wow. Creighton is surprising me. Altman sure knows how to run a program there.
