  • Players Bradley Recruited and Lost

I thought this might make an interesting thread.................Players that Bradley has recruited but lost to other schools.

As much as many seem to b!tch and moan about the lack of production and immediate "panning out" of our recruits I thought it would be interesting to add any information about the "studs" that BU recruited and lost to "bigger and better" schools.

Feel free to add your thoughts about other recruits we may have lost out on. I'll start with three "studs" turned duds that we lost out on the past few years................Charley Coley, Wade Knapp, and Marcus Sykes.

First Charley Coley. This superstud who can leap over tall buildings chose UNC Charlotte over BU. Well, he's averaging 27 minutes through five games (only starting two) and has averaged under 8 ppg and 6.6 rpg. He's shot 2 3-pointers making none, and overall shoots only 46%.

Wade Knapp -- Through 4 games he's started ZERO! This "banger is averaging a whopping 3 ppg and 1.5 rpg. He's only 4-11 on 3-pointers (36%) and has been overall a non-entity for MSU.

Of course the great Marcus Sykes chose "perennial power" Cincinnati over us. He was not very impressive last year on a bad Bearcat team and has done little this year as well.............. 6 games played, ZERO started. Averages 16 mpg and a staggering 3 ppg and 3 rpg. Let's not even talk about his 3-point shooting (2-11 for 18%).

Oh well, too bad we didn't get these guys instead of Cole-Scott, Wilson, Collins, Maniscalco, Egolf, and the rest of our "worthless" slow-to-develop and "over-rated" recruits (he says tongue in cheek )

Please, feel free to add more.............Koshwal, Moses................

Yeah I think it important to remember that the guys we recruit don't come out like gangbusters. The best Freshman production we've had since Anthony Parker and Danny Granger is the Ruffin, Crouch, and O'Bryant threesome as Freshmen. And they definitely didn't start out as gangbusters.

I guess Philip Gilbert was productive for the NIT team with Jerome Robinson.

I think that it is a little too early to start judging how ineffective some of these guys are. If I remember correctly, Wade Knapp was plagued with an ankle injury at the start of the season. Here is an article about Wade Knapp that should sound familiar to our situation with the JUCOS on our team.

A brief excerpt for the article:

"That last game, when Wade finally started playing like Wade's capable of, I think I was more excited for him than for anything I'd done in the previous games," Richards said. "I was so excited that he finally got the monkey off his back."

Added teammate Dale Lamberth: "Wade is one of those players that when he has confidence, he can do a lot of things. With him being new and learning the system, he's felt kind of iffy about some stuff. But we know what he can do."
Coach Barry Hinson said Knapp's transition to D-I is typical of most juco players. It takes a while to learn about the intensity and the physical nature of things. For that reason, Hinson had assistant Kyan Brown whack Knapp with football padding during a game-day practice as Knapp made 25 shots from each side of the lane."

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

These players are the main reason why I feel BU will be more successful by getting at least 3 freshmen each season as part of their recruiting class and filling in with JUCO"S ; we have been blessed with the JUCO:S we have gotten but it is harder to keep your program at the top of the conference each season when you only have players for 2 seasons and not 4 ; Thompson, Egolf and Maniscalco will be proof of this as they will be here for 4 or more which gives them more of a chance to learn the system .

Some of this may be due to the systems at the different schools. Bradley recruits juco kids to play key parts on their teams, and they play a style that requires greater depth. Other schools recruit jucos just to be backups and practice players.
Maybe if Wade Knapp had come to Bradley, he could be playing a much bigger role.
Hopefully kids will see this difference and Bradley will continue to land good juco players.

This is an interesting thread...and I have other threads running that I believe also show some of the guys BU was after might have been better off coming to BU... but I don't deny the kids the right to choose as they wish, even though manhy of them are gtting very little PT.
Maybe if enough examples are evident, it'll sway some guys in the future.....
after all I have evidence that some of these guys DO check BradleyFans.com.

How about Roy Bright? I believe he is average 20+ ppg for the Hornets.

Bright had baggage (having been dismissed from another program) but I know BU was still after him. Why he went to Delaware St. I have no idea.
He definitely can score, but he hasn't helped DSU win.
He is their leading scorer but they are 0-3 against D-I opponents, and even their wins over D-II aren't too impressive (70-69 squeaker at home over D-II St. Paul's of Virginia)

Do you think he would have helped BU?

If he had his head on straight, and bought into what Jim Les is teaching and preaching, I think Bright would have helped BU tremendously. If he didn't, he probably would have only lasted a year.

Coley is almost a carbon copy of Wilson, so that's a wash. And I think Coley will still be a better scorer.

Knapp plays the position in Hinson's system that kills us every single time. Until we figure out how to stop the 4 from going off on us, Knapp will likely have career nights against the Braves. Lamberth isn't good, but the role he plays beats us.
