An Aran Smith comment on NBAdraft.net this morning suggests Patrick is contemplating return to school.

"NBADraft.net also learned that Bradley center Patrick O'Bryant is pondering a return to school. O'Bryant is considered one of the top center prospects in the college game and due to his potential is a likely mid first rounder. But another season of college basketball, working on his body and game would be beneficial to him and he will have a shot to move into mid-lottery level for the 2007 draft."

The NBA cannot compare to college. If POB can afford to stay in school all 4 years he should. Yes, I'm selfish, but can you say Tim Duncan.

I'm not saying the comparison is right or wrong, but I did see in one of the many BU articles during "the run", a professional writer compare P O'B to Tim Duncan.

And Duncan stayed all 4 years and enjoyed immediate success in the NBA. I think staying in school was the best decision Duncan ever made. Quite a role model in all aspects of his career and life.

Was not a desire to want to get his degree a factor in the bigger schools not going after Pat strongly? I think the guy will stick around for one more year, because he wants to learn more (cooking takes passion and patience right?) not just get rich quick.

I am not sure about the Duncan comparisons on the court right now, but I think it's possibly a good comparison provided POB stays in school. He has a lot of room for improvement and has a huge upside, I think.

I hope he does stay. I am a Redbird fan, but I like his game (even though he'll kill my team at least 4 more times if he stays) and I think he's great for the league. I think at least 1 more year (I'd prefer he stays for 2 more) he gets that extra weight-room work and adds a few new wrinkles to his post-game.

The young man has a great upside and staying in school will only help his NBA future. That said, I have no idea what his financial situation is at home. He may have some valid reasons for leaving early should he choose to do so.

If O'Bryant progresses at the rate he did as a Sophomore, I think he'd be a #1 pick by the end of his senior year (and something like the best player in the country). I think it is nearly impossible to hope he'll be back for a senior year.

He really has two reasons to go out this year, if he's got the guaranteed years and money...

1. Injury Risk
2. Team Risk - if the Braves turn bad while he's on the team, it could hurt, rather than help, his college career.

I just had a mostly insane thought. With the NBA trying to keep teams from drafting talent out of high school, what if they could come up with a system where an amateur athlete gets drafted and reserved for the team, without damaging their eligibility in the NCAA. So a player like O'Bryant could get locked up, but then go back to school to play another year. There's a billion reason why that would be legally difficult, but it may be best for the college and pro games.

I've been saying all along that POB will likely make MORE money in the NBA over his career by STAYING at BU one more year. Pigs get fatter and hogs get slaughtered. Don't let the near-term money take your eye off the long-term value.

Joakim Noah and his teammates Corey Brewer & Al Horford all announced they will return to Florida next year when they spoke at the their championship celebration last night.

But, Noah is projected by some to be the absolute #1 pick in this years draft if he wants to come out of school.
I would have to see it to believe it that he'd pass on that opportunity.
These kind of promises are often broken, as Sean May did last year when he promised to come back to UNC but then renegged & declared for the draft.
