  • Florida Gulf Coast Post-Game Talk

we won but it wasn't pretty. too close for comfort.

i don't know why they hesitated to play collins in the second half. he was a monster down low in the first half.

it seemed like nobody wanted to take control of the game at the end. ruffin and warren both got their points but even they looked to pass it off in crunch time.

We will never win on the road with 20+ turnovers.
    Can we start winning soon?

Yeah, a win is a win, but still making me nervous. I think the Iowa game will be a good barometer for our season. Not that I believe one game makes it, but I think we can get a good read about what this team can/cannot do.

BU outrebounded FGCU and they are now 4 for 4 outrebounding their opponents. That's something that was rare last season.
But I think the rapid substitutions are hurting the continuity of the team. IMO, they would have fewer turnovers if there weren't so many lineup changes. But it probably does help the development of the younger guys.

It was an ugly game, but a game that the team can build on. Should be an interesting film session tonight or tomorrow. The new players are getting better, and Salley had a nice defensive game. Obviously need to cut down on the lazy turnovers and the turnovers by our senior guards! I agree with what has been said on this thread so far---need to see even more of David Collins!
          Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final

???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

Bradley Fights Off Florida Gulf Coast, 82-74

PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley senior point guard Daniel Ruffin (Peoria, Ill./Central H.S.) scored all of his team-high 16 points in the second half and forwards Matt Salley (Charlotte, N.C./North Mecklenburg H.S.) and Theron Wilson (Topeka, Kan./Highland Park H.S.) made two key plays down the stretch, helping the Braves (3-1) fight off Florida Gulf Coast (1-3) for their 28th consecutive non-conference home win in the second round of the South Padre Island Invitational Tuesday night at Carver Arena.Bradley senior point guard scored all of his team-high 16 points in the second half and forwards and made two key plays down the stretch, helping the Braves (3-1) fight off Florida Gulf Coast (1-3) for their 28th consecutive non-conference home win in the second round of the South Padre Island Invitational Tuesday night at Carver Arena.

JC and Ruff combined for 10 turnovers! This is simply unacceptable from senior guards. To your point Da Coach, are we too deep? Last year we didnt have enough guys but everyone knew who was going to play since there was no one else. This year we are so deep it seems coach Les has not yet figured out who is going to get the minutes.

I thought the refs were awful in the first part of the second half and that it really affected Bradley offense, since they were getting hacked on every shot and pushed on any dribble drive but without any calls from the refs. I think they became tentative and FGCU smelled blood. They played good D in the second half, and Bradley played pretty sloppy.

I'm tired of all of the 4-guard play. Collins has really come along, and I believe it's time to see a lot more of Collins and Salley on the floor at the same time. I believe that Theron Wilson is doing great, and on defense is okay in there, but our offense suffers when we have no real post threat.

I think this was a good game for us as far as physical play and adversity as we played so well at the start and struggled so much the 2nd half yet found a way to win ; we have to take better care of the ball as we will not be able to continue to have so many turnovers and still be able to win games; I really liked the way we passed the ball in the 1st half; I also thought that we fought a lot harder on the boards which we need to do every game if we expect to beat the really good teams; I will say that the Florida team thru in a lot of tough shots tonight and fought us on every possession .

I do want to give FGCU some respect, they hung in there and played hard the whole game. I think they have some pretty talented guys on the team, and may surprise some folks down the road.

I still do think the refs bailed them out at the beginning of the second half, but they executed when they got their opportunities and played tough all night.

                      Good first ten minutes...

but a terrible, terrible showing in the second half...no defensive intensity...zero offensive flow...our 2 senior guards turning the ball over 10 times...at home...against FGCU...is very disappointing.

Cole-Scott looks completely lost right now...I really can't see him getting many minutes in meaningful situations as we go forward unless he makes big strides on both ends of the floor...
All the talk of him being Newcomer of the Year and making 1st team All-Valley this year after the St. Ambrose game are looking pretty comical right now...

                      On the brighter side...
I thought Egolf, Collins, and Maniscalco all played pretty well off the bench...Salley played much better tonight...especially on the defensive end.

Oh well...better to struggle like this in November than January and February, I suppose...

South Padre will be a good barometer to see if we are able to learn from these lapses in consistency...and get it cleaned up...Iowa is a bad, bad basketball team this year, but if we can't take better care of the ball and remain composed for 40 minutes we will be in trouble against anyone in the country...

I watched parts of the Iowa game on tv, and they had their hands full all night with UMES.

Not trying to dig up the Mo argument... but I recall Mo talking up his depth, and we would see it in exhibition... then it would disappear and he would play 6-7 players is all.

At least now, we have depth and Les is playing them.

Some friends have told me they think Sam M should not get so much time... but I stand strong on my opinion that the time Sam M sees now will pay bigger dividends later. And carrying that over to the other 'depth' being given minutes now... I think it will make us so much better later.

I hate seeing all the turnovers. And having a lineup with so many talented guards in the game at one time... eeesssshhh.

I could pick on a player for this or a player for that... but I could easily double the comments for each player that I like about them. I REALLY like these guys - TONS. ALL OF THEM.

                          GO BU!

Let's go do UIUC another favor and beat Iowa!

                            MM,

I agree. I like the talent on this team. Many new faces with much to learn. It will be fun to see the improvement as the year goes along.

Right now we have to get more production out of the 2 spot.
