  • Newcomers v. UMES

First I would like to preface my comments by saying that IMHO UMES was the WORST basketball team to play in Carver Arena in a long time, maybe ever. That includes the exhibition games v. lower Divisions. they were disorganized, undisciplined, and had no intention of playing competative basketball from the tip yesterday. It is a crime that schools like this are robbing the rest of Div. I basketball and their fans of their money.

But it is time to move on. It was good to see our newcomers play a lot yesterday. I think the strenghts and weaknesses of each player were evident yesterday. Most of what I am sure the coaches see in practice were evident to us on Carver Arena floor.

I think Will E., David Collins, and TCS are the players that we need to have the greatest impact on our season. All have demonstrated the ability to be very productive in several areas.

TCS is the player we need to have improvement from sooner rather than later. He is oozing with talent and quickness. He is simply lacking a feel for the finer points of the game especially on defense. He often gets caught too close to his man and if you watch, they drive him into the center of our defense and we break down when he is on the floor. He just can't seen to recover once his man has a step on him. On offense he is making progress. Yesterday you saw him driving the baseline and looking for the shooters. That is a staple of our offense along with the pick and roll.

Will E. and David are a much closer IMO. There are really progressing. I know many are worried about Davids turnovers yesterday but UMES had nothing to loose and were jumping every passing lane. I have faith the the staff can work this issue out with David.

I agree, I think Sam is starting to get comfortable and in JL's system his hard work and hustle will pay off sooner rather than later. I still think it's ridiculous how strong he is for a 6 foot guard. That will really help him defend some of the bigger guys he'll guard. I hope he can learn to use his size like Deron Williams did after a couple years. I do worry that because of his size he may be a step slow though...

I think Sam is doing fine. He is becoming relaiable in regards to taking care of the ball and making good decisions. He will not likely provide the scoring lift that TCS can when others are cold. Also, with him as the 2 guard is my concern is his ability to get the weakside rebound. Will was sneaky athletic, as well as Tony Bennett. Those two go get by being smaller because of athleticism. Sam as a frosh may struggle in this area.

I agree here, I think Sam is going to need to learn to use his strength to get positioning instead of speed or athleticism, that being said I am still continually impressed by his level of play for a freshman. Come MVC time I think he will be a VERY solid contributor.

Since we're talking about new guys, is Will ever going to really play a 4 or 5 it seems now hes somewhere in between 3 and 4. I don't see a problem with this at all, just curious what you guys think JL has him working toward.

Will is more of a wing type player right now as he gets stronger he will get better at playing inside.
