UMES did have 3 starters in down the stretch. Then with the game completely out of hand, their coach called a timeout with 1:08 to go. I thought he would put his bench guys in, but NO! He puts back a 4th starter! The only reason he didn't have all 5 starters was because the big goon Popovich had been ejected! Bizarre! They cut the lead down, and many of BU's turnovers came with their starters against Bradley's walkons!

Again I have to say, that was the absolutely worst coached team I have ever seen in Division I or anywhere. Their offense consisted of 5 guys running around a while, then one of them goes 1-on-1 and pops a shot.
Their defense consisted of grabbing, holding and hacking. They had some athletes, but they weren't very good basketball players.

And it was hilarious when one of their guys made a 3-pointer late while 30 points behind, and he taunts Tyrone Cole-Scott. The refs missed that one, but a minute later, after a layup, they were called for a technical foul for taunting. And later after a breakaway dunk, another Hawk made the "bird in flight" hand gesture as he walked back down the court. Those guys were ridiculous! And their coach encouraged it.
I hate to say it, but that coach and those players make Chicago State look like John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins by comparison!

I took my granddaughter to the game so I??™m a little late getting home. As a result of being late I thought I would post before reading what others have stated while I can still remember my thoughts. Yeah, I know??¦

The game was over early and got sloppy as a result. Nonetheless, we have to clean up turnovers. In general, and David Collins in particular, we have to not turnover the outlet pass. I don??™t want to pick on DC as I thought he really looked good although his 4th foul was silly. It was good to see him throw one down. And his free throws are almost automatic which is unheard of for a post player.

The two big pluses for me were Andrew Warren and Sam Maniscalco. BU needs Drew to step up and he showed he can. Sam looked much more comfortable today. Also, Rashad Austin looked good in his limited minutes. Not much else to say about the rest of the team as things went as expected.

I do have one question about the ejection. Can an ejected player remain on the bench? I always thought they could not, but this was not the case in this game. Did the refs just miss the fact that the player was on the bench?

Anyway, in total it looks to me as if the team is making game by game progress, and I guess that is all one can ask. Go Braves!

We asked some of the BU officials and they said because he wasn't dressed it out was OK? But I was of the same line of thought as you MR. Though he was a good sport about it and even told his teammate who threw up the two-handed bird to the student section after a dunk that was really dumb.

I agree with T, that was a VERY poorly coached team. Almost NBA-esque with out the caliber of players...

Yeah, two more things. As many pointed out Maryland's free throws were terrible. One even shot an air ball. AN AIRBALL FREE THROW. And when their one player was taunting many yelled out SCOREBOARD.

He was tossed in the first half and remained dressed and on the bench. He didn't change until halftime.

I just checked the NCAA rule book, which is in pdf format, so I can't copy it here, but it says in essence...

If a player commits a flagrant foul he is ejected but does not have to leave the bench area.
However, he cannot re-enter the game. He is eligible for the following game.
(this is the same as if he had gotten two technical fouls and is ejected/disqualified, he does not need to leave the bench area.)

However, if the player is ejected for "fighting", a determination made by the referee, and even broadened to include any bench personnel who leave the bench area to participate in a fight anywhere on the court, then the ejection also requires suspension from the player's (or coach's) subsequent game, so that he cannot play the next game...although he can be on the bench.

These rules differ slightly from IHSA, as in high school ball, any disqualification for getting two technicals
does result in a game suspension, ineligibility for the following game.

Any thoughts on why they called a timeout with a minute left and down by almost 30? The only idea that came to mind was to give the fans a reason to leave early, which in turn would show the Bradley players the fans wern't supporting them. Any thoughts?

I absolutely love watching Egolf on defense and running the floor when we get a steal! He's looking more and more comfortable all the time....as are the others that are playing their first D-1 ball!

My explanation was that he appeared to want to put a 4th starter back into the game. Maybe he was protesting what he thought was unfair treatment by the refs. I have never seen a coach call a timeout late like that to a put starter back into the game when it was so hopeless.
