Second, if people were making statements about Sam 'taking us to the next level' and the like, they probably hadn't seen him play yet, and statements like that are really unfair to Sam. He's a solid freshman guard, and will be a solid 4 year player. Iman Shumpert is a guy that could take us to the next level.
Third, he'll end up playing more combo than the true point (i.e. Tony Bennett/Will Franklin) when it's all said and done.
Let's keep this realistic, for our own sanity and out of respect for Sam. There's no reason to put unrealistic expectations on the kid. It's not fair to him or us.Onward and Upward!

a couple questions....
--just how many freshmen have started for Jim Les?
--how many freshmen have ever started for Bradley?
--is 5 points, no turnovers really an unacceptable performance in the kid's first game ever?
--if our 6-5 guards couldn't keep Josh Mayo from nailing 11 of 17 shots, then why so harsh on Sam M?
I think BU ran into a team that played very well despite reasonably good "D", and it is a game we will learn from. I am not ready to give up on the season yet, nor on any of our fine freshmen.

I am confused about SM.
In high school he was:
A first-team all-state pick by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association
2007 Associated Press Third-Team All-State
So depending on who you want to believe he was a top 5 to 15 player last season in the state of Illinois.
But now after 17 minutes of college basketball it has been conculed that he is to short, to slow, to everything to be a successful college basketball player. He could never possibly improve because well he wont because his first 17 minutes were not incredible or he has been beaten on defense in all of the games he has played in.
I think he really should just go ahead and quit and since we lost our first game there really is no reason to continue playing the rest of our games.
When are people going to realize that one game does not make a player and one game does not make a season?
We were going to incure growing pains and news flash we probably will lose another game, and gasp it might not be only to SIU or Creighton winning division 1 games is not easy and it is not easy ever to go on the road and win games no matter who it is you play.
Yes I understand bad loses but I also understand good/great wins and this program this year has many opportunities to do just that... and SM will be here for 4 years and I expect by the time he is allowed to grow he will also provide good/great memories as a college basketball player.

Hey, one guy is a little worried that Sam might not be the guard that we all hoped he would be. He is entitled to have an opinion. I don't necessarily agree with him.
It also doesn't mean that there is a lack of support for Sam. It is just one opinion. I think Sam will be a fine player at BU. I just wouldn't turn one persons posted opinion into more than it is.Get Well Massive Mike! "Once a Brave always a Brave!"

Sound familiar??????Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

I think Sam will be fine. I am amazed how after a few exhibitions many comments are made about how good or bad a recruit is. (I have made them myself in the past and have been shown to be very stupid comments on my part). Even saying that high school plyers could take us to the next level seems risky since many "stars" prove not to be so good in college. I hope the program is either at the point or soon gets to the point where it doesn't have to rely on freshman or for that matter JCs contributing very much early. Not many freshman have contributed much at BU, maybe a few. Even the JCs who have been good contributors took most of the 1st year to really get aclumated.
T - I appreciate looking at things as half full and not half empty but I am not sure what I saw from a defensive standpoint I would call "reasonably good". That kind of defense will lose many, many games for the Braves this year. I am not sure it was because the team isn't ready to play the defense required to beat the teams on the schedule or (in my opinion) an effort that did not match UICs. I felt that UIC wanted the game more than BU did, but maybe I expect too much."Let's make some noise".

I think Sam is good right now and is going to be very good for us in the future but Im not looking at him as a freshman who played his first game but a player who got a lot of minutes. I trust the coaches but I cant figure out wat Sam does that earns him twice as many minutes as TCS. Was TCS bad on D during his minutes? I guess I dont know enough about what to look for to make a sound judgement. Either way I expect Coach Les will get the kinks out sooner then later and we will get our first win tomorrow night. Can we start winning soon?
