  • Almost a Mistake by Rick Majerus

Rick Majerus believed that he could use a player in an exhibition game and then still redshirt the kid, and that was his stated intention with Saint Louis sophomore Dustin McGuire.
He almost did, but found that the NCAA rules would have prohibited it just in time to hold the kid out of the exhibition game.

Here is the St. Louis Post-Dispatch story of how Majerus came to find out he had nearly made a huge mistake, because he didn't know the NCAA rules.

Turns out that you can only redshirt a kid who's played in an exhibition if he is a freshman but McGuire is a sophomore.
So now he's learned the NCAA rule, Majerus can no longer consider playing the kid if he still wants McGuire to redshirt.
In addition, sounds like even though SLU won their exhibition game, Majerus was apparently not a happy camper.

"Dustin Maguire is probably going to redshirt. Majerus spelled it out: He’s not a point guard and he’s not strong enough to be a 3,
and Majerus said they were going to talk about redshirting after the game.
...Majerus said they were going to use Maguire in the game and then decide, but they found that you can only use a player in an exhibition and then redshirt him if he’s a freshman. He expressed displeasure with the NCAA for that."

Anything else you want to whine about Rick? Maybe you should've stayed retired, huh?
A real fan celebrates the successes, but also acknowledges the failures of his team.

Think about how much fun it would be to have RM as a target for the student body each year at Carver Arena

I've talked to friends here and at SLU and the question always comes up when we talk hoops, why don't BU and SLU play eachother? The distance is close enough where a pretty good rivalry could build up between the two, it's a shame that the two schools haven't gotten together on a series.

BU did play SLU and I believe opened up the Kiel at the time. BU lost in what I think was AP's senior season. Kiel was sold out. Those upper level end zone seats are no fun.

Isn't that the kind of thing an assistant coach is suppose to handle, keeping the big dog out of trouble? Who's sitting second chair there at Billikentown anyways? Anyone we know?
