  • Illini 90 - South Dakota State 65

Here are the things I observed-
Illinois is quick, even quicker than last year.
At least Deron Williams walked the ball up the court sometimes, but nobody on this present Illinois team does. They run all the time and even look out of control sometimes, but their quickness will win games, even though it results in some turnovers.

Jamar Smith is a good shooter, a very good shooter.
He was 3-5 on 3-pt shots tonight for 9 points.

Chester Frazier will be a very good point guard. He already is a decent backup for when Dee sits down, but he is quick, strong, and a good passer. Critics need to eat their words.

Brian Randle needs to mature. This was a 25 pt blowout and yet after every referee whistle, Brian threw his head back, rolled his eyes, and argued like he was innocent. He is a big baby and I can see exactly why he slammed his fist into the wall, as he has no self control.

Carter and Pruitt did a good job in the paint but one player noticably did not.

Marcus Arnold is terrible. Remember, this is South Dakota State. Nobody on their team would even start for EIU, and yet Marcus couldn't get a rebound, couldn't find the handle, couldn't make a shot, and even tried dribbling out of the paint one time, and showed he can't dribble well either. I had never thought he was a high major playerl. He is destined to play only garbage time minutes against SDSU and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
In a game like this, he should have dominated in there. Instead, Bruce Weber was forced to limit Marcus' playing time since he was playing so bad.
Is it possible for the guy to redshirt another year? Seriously, maybe he can transfer to D-II without sitting out a year, and play at a level he might not look so bad.

You are being a little harsh on Marcus Arnold. He will be a good player for Illinois. Otherwise why would Bruce Weber have recruited him to transfer to Illinois. It was just his first game, so go easy on him.

If you actually saw the game you'd have hardly argued.
Every time Arnold touched the ball (which wasn't very often as he never seems to be in the right place to be in on any of the action) something bad happened. In the Illini's three games so far, including two exhibitions (and remember, he is probably getting way more chance to play in these games than he will when the Big Ten games start), he has played 43 minutes total, is 2-9 in shooting, 7 pts total, only 4 rebounds total, but 7 fouls and 4 turnovers. And as I said, his stats will now begin to dop off as the Illini play tougher competition.

I agree with your assemsment of Randle. He has a boat load of talent but somethig is just missing from his game. He has been coddled and I am surprised that the coachinf staff hasnt been able to reign him in yet...He seems more worried about himself than he does about the big picture....Hope he comes around or he'll get passed by

Anyone remember this pitiful South Dakota State team?

They are just now in the transition to Division I, so with this latest news, I guess they have now joined the top echelon.

          Welcome to Division I
