I agree it isn't a question for Glen. (But he was the first I could think of involved with overseeing some Game Management. And I am sure Glen would send any inquiry into the right direction)
    Thanks for helping.

May be a dumb question, but why does the band and the cheerleaders, whose job it is to keep the crowd in the game, have to go through "game management"? Maybe that's the problem.

Not that I know for sure, but I would think it has something to with the deals with sponsers. Now I think the Par-A-Dice thing was astupid waste of time like just about everybody else, but deals like that and the Courtesy Cleaners or whatever it is Trivia Game bring in $ and pay the bills, the band and cheerleaders don't ... not directly at least.

            The Response

Ok so here is what I got back from him... It sounds like we will have to follow the script...

Thank you for your email. I agree wholeheartedly with your interest in
keeping the crowd in to the game, especially during key runs. As a
former basketball coach myself, I understand the importance of this to
the team and our ability to win games; that is always my desire. I do
want to explain to you the need for a script. At the Civic Center, no
less than 7 different groups of people are integrally involved in making
the game a success. From the PA announcer, band, cheerleaders, and dance
team to the video board operator, the audio control room, and the
lighting technicians, everyone must be on the same page in order for us
to have a cohesive show. My job, as the 'producer' of that show, is to
ensure that not only everyone is on the same page, but that we also are
able provide that show to the fans. In order to provide the show we
solicit corporate sponsors to provide funding for our athletic
department. This funding allows us to pay for not only staff, but smoke
machines, intro videos, band funds, and many other things that help make
things go. My very difficult challenge each night is finding a balance
between honoring the needs of our sponsors to get their name and product
in front of the 10,000 or so fans at our games, but also to make sure
that our atmosphere creates a competitive advantage for our team. I can
assure you that I am not tied to the script...however, it is necessary
to have a set script and have announcements, commercials, presentations
and acts all built in to the script. While these items sometimes seen to
encroach on the game, the script allows everyone to know when they are
coming and be prepared to make them as little of a distraction as
possible. I strive each game to make these items an unobtrusive as
possible to the game. Some games it works better than others.

Again, I appreciate and agree with your concern. I hope that you can
appreciate my position and the requirements that I need to follow. The
band has been an outstanding part of our game management thus far, and I
look forward to your continued spirit and energy at the games. Your
promptness into :30 second time-outs has been awesome and we keep all
announcements off of those time-outs so that you guys can really keep
the energy in the building going. Please pass on to your fellow band
members my gratitude for the part that you play in our production. I
look forward to a great season.

            John Searby

            Asst. AD - External Affairs

            Bradley Athletics

            .......................
so unless the script shows that we play during the next timeout, we will have to wait until after the announcements.

Thanks for taking the time to get that out to us. So please remember when us old fogies want to make noise and can't because of stupid promotions and useless PA announcements, it's not always our fault.

A couple comments for the cheerleader coach...

Is there any way to get a couple cheerleaders in front of the bench side of the student section(this is where the more die-hard fans are) and it's hard for us to hear your chants if there is noise at all. I know this may be regulated but maybe one or two could stand in the aisle or something, just so our side could hear.

Also, could you start you cheers sooner? After we score theres lots of excitement that is often lost if a cheer is not started soon and starting a crowd from dead quiet is awkward sometimes...

Thanks, and do you mind if we keep this going throughout the year?

In defense of the cheerleaders I have to say they could start their cheers sooner if the stupid promotions and the worthless chatter from our PA annoucer would stop. In saying that I also have to say the first time the cheerleaders hit the court tonight was with 7:33 left in the first half. I know the rest of the crowd doesn't cheer as wildly as our great student section does, but isn't it their job to run around and try to get the crowd going. No one can hear them yelling into a megaphone while the band is playing. Speaking of the band, what was the music played with 17 minutes to go when Iowa St had to call a timeout because the Braves were rolling and the crowd finally had a reason to get into the game. The Bradley fight song is the ONLY piece of music that should be played because the crowd is on their feet and will stay on their feet when that is played. It shouldn't be scheduled to be played only with 2 minutes left.

I, too, don't understand why we HAVE to have a schedule of what is played and when it is played.

I agree... Would also like the band to get rid of going from different chords toward the end of the song. Never been a fan of that.

I'm in the band, but I don't remember what song that was. However, a good chunk of the music that we play is published by Arrangers Publishing Company, and there is streaming audio on their website. It does sound different than the band performances, mainly because it's recorded in a studio (the instrumentation might also be different). Anyways, here are some of the songs that we play that are available on the website as streaming audio:

                          13 - Gimme Some Lovin' - http://arrangerspublishingcompany.co...some_lovin.ram

14 - You Really Got Me - no link available

                          176 - Hey! Baby! - http://arrangerspublishingcompany.co...r/Hey_Baby.ram

                          Other non-APC songs:

Various songs in our cheer section

                          C-3 - Dudley Do Right
C-14 - Go BU, Go Go BU!
C-19 - One More Cheer For Our Alma Mater
                          C-36 - Funkytown
C-37 - No Limit (the one with the huge drum solo in the middle)

                          Other songs:

1 - Hail Red And White (post-game alma mater song)
2 - The Star Spangled Banner
                          5 - Victory Song
                          8 - Swing March
                          42 - Splish Splash
46 - Carry On My Wayward Son
                          101 - Rocky
                          150 - Surfin' USA
                          153 - Wipeout

That's all that I can think of right now. There might have been a few others, but I don't remember them the moment.

P.S. The numbers in front of the songs are there because the songs are numbered in our binders.

JasonatBradley, I'm not knocking the band, you guys are great. But certain music should played at certain times and the Bradley fight song should be played EVERYTIME the Braves on a roll. What's so hard about that. I used to think Splish Spash was the fight song.

I understand your point. I was just responding to a certain part of your quote (as you can see in the first post that I gave) and was trying to help you figure out which song the band was playing with 17 minutes to go.

Ditto... Really like the contributions of the band. Playing the fight song while BU is on a roll would add a lot to the atomosphere to the game... But please please please get rid of the band going from major to minor chords at the end of the song!!!!!!!!
