Bradley Hall of Famers to Provide Insight for Insight Broadcasts
PEORIA, Ill. -- For the second time in four years, Bradley has brought local coaching icon Chuck Buescher out of retirement, but the former Braves assistant and Central boys head coach will not be on the bench during the 2007-08 season. Instead, Buescher will serve as the lead analyst for the eight Bradley men’s basketball games Insight Communications will produce as well as a second radio analyst for the other 23 games on WMBD AM 1470.
Buescher will team with another Bradley Athletics Hall of Fame member on the Insight television broadcasts as Frank Bussone will return as the play-by-play talent. A member of both the Bradley and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Halls of Fame in recognition of his broadcast work, Bussone provided television play-by-play for the Braves in the 1970s and 1980s for broadcasts on WTVP, WHOI and primarily on WEEK. Bussone, who received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communications from Bradley, also worked with Mort Cantor on WIRL radio broadcasts of Bradley Basketball.
Buescher is well known by local basketball fans. A 1967 Bradley graduate who played basketball for both Chuck Orsborn and Joe Stowell, Buescher enjoyed two stints as an assistant coach for the Braves from 1971-79 and again from 2005-07. In between, he led the Peoria Central High School program for 25 years, coaching the Lions to 528 wins from 1979 through 2004 with 21 regional championships and back-to-back state championships in 2003 and 2004. After a brief try at retirement during the 2004-05 season, Buescher returned to the Braves as an assistant coach on Jim Les’ staff. In his two years back on The Hilltop, Buescher helped Bradley to consecutive 22-win seasons, a run to the 2006 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and a follow-up run to the second round of the 2007 MasterCard National Invitation Tournament.
Buescher announced his retirement from coaching in May, but remains close to the Bradley Basketball program. He helped recruit the majority of the 16 players on the roster and he is the father of Bradley associate head coach Eric Buescher.
Insight Communications will produce eight Bradley games during the 2007-08 season, beginning with the regular-season opener Nov. 10 at Illinois-Chicago. In addition to its own eight-game package, the local cable television provider also will air the Lakeshore Public Television broadcast of Bradley’s Nov. 28 game at Loyola Chicago.
The primary on-air talent for Bradley’s radio broadcasts on WMBD AM 1470 remains unchanged. Dave Snell begins his 29th season as the “Voice of the Braves” and he will be joined for the 23rd consecutive season by Bradley Hall of Famer Joe Stowell. Snell has played a role in 847 consecutive radio broadcasts of Bradley Basketball, while Stowell, who is a former Bradley player, assistant coach, head coach and administrator, begins the season having played a role in 1,468 all-time Bradley men’s basketball games, dating back to 1947.
