  • Sam Maniscalco segment on WEEK/Video Link Is Up

Lee Hall had a nice long segment with video and an interview with Sam Maniscalco on the WEEK 6:00 news tonight.
It will likely be repeated on the 10:00 news tonight, so watch for it.

They also usually post these video segments on their website, but it is not there, yet.

THIS may sound crazy but this is a big part of the game/players I like to follow and often judge kids by...right or wrong. I guess what I'm saying is sometimes you can really tell about someone in how they interview, the way they act, the things they say.

Sam M grades out as high as a freshman ever has in my just made up off the court grading scale. (wink)

The kid is well spoken, makes eye contact and says all the correct things. It wasn't coached...or maybe it was by his parents but thats a good thing.

Sam is going to give us all he has. He is going to be coachable, a student of the game and will be a rock for BU for 4 years. You can just tell.

Jimmy got a good one. Personally I think he's going to be better than the kid at SIU (senior moment I forget his name) who I like as a player. Sam can shoot better and I think will be as good defensively eventually.

He's also got the advantage Ruffin never had by getting to learn from a Senior (Ruffin) in practice and during the game.

Bryan Mullin is the guy at SIU. I think Sam is a better shooter and I would be very happy if he can play D as well as Mullins.
      Can we start winning soon?

Yeah thanks...Mullins. Good defensively while not a good shooter. I think he did have a good shooting game against Kansas last year though.

I think SM is light years ahead of Mullins as a shooter and I've heard he's as good a defensive player as Mullins was as a Senior in HS.

        Hows SM's ball handling?

Mullins is a very good player, and a very smart kid as well. He makes the other kids playing with him much better, and I don't think he got enough credit
for the success of SIU last year. He was just a sophomore, and I expect his shooting to be a lot better this year.

I also think Sam can be as good as Mullins. Even with the best 2 guards in the league, I predict Sam will play 20 minutes a game.
          Time will tell.

20's alot for a freshman IMO, I look for 12-15. JC and DR will be 30 +........JMHO.

FWIW, there are some media people in Chicago who think Sam was the best guard in Chicago last year, and would have been getting looks from teams like UNC, Duke, Kansas, UCLA, etc. if he were 6'3" instead of 6'0". Having seen him play a few times, the superlatives I hear don't surprise me.

Great just when we are all excited about SM you have to bring opinions from those "media people".....j/k.

                Actually good to hear.

What have you heard or do you know about his "handles'. Probably a dumb question but I've heard about his shooting and D but not much about his passing skills. Not saying they haven't been discussed just that I haven't heard anything.

He has the ball handling skills of a point guard. IIRC, he played primarily PG on the AAU circuit. He certainly can spell DR at the point if needed.

Thats a concern I have this year....backup to DR. He needs to rest and we need to have someone to fill in for those 2-3 minute blows he'll take. While SM sounds like he can he's still a freshman, we can't forget that fact.

DR was capable as a freshman (I am talking about the year he DIDN'T play). Sam is too. So is Tyrone Cole-Scott.

yeah, i don't see that as much of a problem because ruff is in the game for 32-36 minutes which leaves only a few. i think between sam m, tc-s, and even warren, we should be fine bringing the ball up for those few minutes a game.

Really look forward to the R/W to see these Ruffin backups in action.....

Come to think of it JC is a good ball handler also.....cetainly not quick like DR but few are. What JC lacks in speed he makes up for with smarts.

I was at the Creighton/Xavier game back in 2003 on New Year's eve. Absolutely great game as K Korver hit 3 3's in a row from the same area on the floor but like a foot further out each time and with someone closer in his face each time to bring the game to 1 possession with a minute to go. The Cintas Center went silent after the 3rd in a row ('cept this MVC fan - ).

The releveance to this thread and post: I recall Funk getting in the game as a Freshman and thinking 'Cheeze-n'Rice.... get that guy outta there... he isn't ready for this level yet and is a liability on the floor'... (remember, Xavier had David West among other talented players like Chalmers). Anyway - Funk looked so nervous out there. And I wondered if he was gonna blossom into a force. (and he did - in a huge way with a very successful career at CU).

I like what I have heard about Sammy and can't wait to see him play!
