  • More info regarding the new Bradley TV deal

The Bradley Athletic office wanted to pass along to the fans more information about the TV deal and why it came out like it did.

Here was the release from Bradley about the TV deal--
PEORIA, Ill. -- Two weeks after WEEK-TV (Peoria NBC 25) announced it will not be televising Bradley men's basketball games during the 2007-08 season, Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh today announced an agreement with Peoria cable provider Insight Communications to produce at least nine games this year.? The agreement means at least 19 of Bradley's 31 regular-season games during the 2007-08 season are scheduled for television broadcasts, equalling (1987-88) the most televised games in program history.? "We are elated by Insight's willingness to step forward and become a key partner for Bradley University," said Kavanagh. "Insight is providing us the opportunity to show the great product that is Bradley Basketball to as many fans as possible.? In particular, we are excited about the likelihood of all nine of our Valley road games being viewed by our terrific supporters. In addition to their own subscribers in Central Illinois, Insight also has expressed a willingness to share their productions with other cable providers outside its service area to provide what amounts to a Bradley Basketball television network."

But there is more to this than was officially released, and it involves some great things for the future if things fall in place the way everyone hopes.

The final decision that WEEK would not be doing the TV broadcasts, that they had done for many years, did not come until it was a little late to work out any other sort of a good deal for local telecasts. And the main reason for WEEK's decision was related to the cost of doing the games, and the even greater losses they incur when they pre-empt their network programming. It might have been different if they could have picked the top games to broadcast, but several of the top games were gobbled up by the MVC Network and ESPN.
So even if Bradley would have had more time, the other local broadcast stations would have the same problems, in that they would not be eager to pre-empt network shows, incur the increasing expenses of doing road games, and settle for a TV package that didn't include some of the top games. WMBD, for example, has also cut back on their telecasts of ISU games for these same reasons. They will broadcast only 1 ISU game-- the Bradley game at ISU. WTVP (channel 47) was interested, but there were cost and logistical issues for them as well. They were not well equipped to do road games, and the quality of their broadcasts is a bit different than that of the network stations. Note that WTVP will be broadcasting one game-- the Dec. 29 game at Carver Arena against Northern Iowa.

In pursuing a new television package, one of the primary goals was to maximize the number of road games broadcast back to the Peoria area. This agreement is not primarily motivated by money, but rather motivated by the desire to make sure fans have the best opportunity possible to follow the team. Insight was willing to step up and has guaranteed six of Bradley's road games that would not have otherwise been televised in Central Illinois, which will make them available to the largest bulk of the fan base. They also are willing to increase that number to eight (the Butler and Wright State games) if sponsorship can be arranged that suits Insight.

Obviously, over-the-air broadcast stations reach the greatest number of homes, but as stated above, it became impossible to continue trying to televise the Bradley games via the local broadcast stations. As the publicity release on the BU website stated (see link above), Insight has expressed a willingness to make their telecasts available to other cable systems, allowing Bradley to potentially create a network to reach more people in the future. Bradley and Insight are working on those details and they hope to soon make the games available beyond Insight's local service area. This extended network deal may not be an overnight development, but it is something they hope could happen quicker rather than later (maybe some developments could come before this season is over?).

Comcast will be taking over Insight's operations in January, and that is an encouraging development because Comcast reaches a much larger subscriber base, including the Chicago area, and several surrounding states. It is hoped that the Bradley games could be networked into the Chicago area Comcast system, and maybe further.

So again, the people at Bradley who have done a tremendous job of putting this TV package together on very short notice, ask all Bradley fans to be patient. The network that hopefully could develop in the near future will be far better than anything we have had in the past, and will cover the great majority of Bradley's games each year.

What Insight channel will the games be on?

I do not know. But my guess is that it will be a channel that is not in use for other programming at the time. Such a channel as 44 in the Peoria area is used for advertising most of the time, but when additional sports programming is broadcast, they often show it on 44.

        This is GREAT news!

What a BOOST to the program! (Just to stick a fork in someone who posts at another board who plainly said losing WEEK was a BLOW to the program - sheesh, whatever... )

        2 Questions:

        1) Who are potential candidates for doing the games? The press release says: "The on-air talent for Insight??™s Bradley Basketball telecasts has not yet been determined and will be announced at a later date." Anyone have any candidates in mind?

        2) Anyone who knows anything about cable (which I do not), help us out here. What does this mean to say someone in California? Can a person go to a sports bar and ask the place to pipe in the BU game? I understand this wouldn't be part of like the Full Court package on the dish (or would it?), but if a joint had a satellite to pipe in cable channels from all over the country - would this be accessible?

          1) I don't know who they would get for the broadcast team. It would likely not be any of the sports guys from the local network affiliates, nor Dave Snell, who would be busy with the radio call.

          2) If the games get picked up by Comcast, then theoretically they should be able to be seen as far away as California if you have a powerful enough satellite connection.

As for on-air talent, I liked what I heard from Chad Kleine during some of last year's broadcasts. I wonder if they will combine the radio commentary from Dave Snell and Joe Stowell at the begining???? This would probably save money, but from what I have seen and heard in the past, the combination of radio commentary paired with the televison broadcast seems to be a little disconnected and I am certain that it is difficult for the announcer to do this.

MVC Network? Is that like the Big 10 network?

                Huh?

Forgive me if I'm still a bit naive on this board and don't know the clout/levels of "BU access" of the members....I've recently moved from the PJStar board.....but I'm kinda confused:

If the athletic dept. "wanted to pass along to the fans more information," why wouldn't they have put that out in an official message instead of "leaking" (for lack of a better term) it to a message board?
A real fan celebrates the successes, but also acknowledges the failures of his team.

Not quite. The MVC network does not have it's own broadcast outlet but rather arranges for their selected games to be carried by FoxSports Midwest, ComcastSportsNet, and occasionally on ESPN.

The Big Ten Network is far more extensive.

Without BCS football, the MVC will never have the revenue to have it's own 'network' in the sense that the Big 10 does. There are many that aren't sold on the Big 10 network being viable for the long haul. The MVC teaming with a distributor like Comcast and/or ESPN is what we need to hope for.

The BU Athletic Department did put out much of this information through it's press release today. But because much of what I related above is still in development, and nothing is assured, they aren't going to make any official announcement until the details are firmed up.

Because the official announcement left a lot of this extra information out, there was consternation among the fans posting here and elsewhere that maybe this new TV deal isn't as good in some ways as the old TV deals were. So BradleyFans.com, which the BU people recognize reaches a lot of Bradley fans received more information via email, and we were asked to pass it along to the fans. This is what you refer to as "leaking" the info, and it's somewhat of a new phenomenon. I think it's because there was never a good way to get this kind of information out to fans before.
I think they want everyone to know they are working to make this TV deal better for all the fans, but they hope fans will be patient as the process isn't completed yet.

Agree with your post BradleyBrave... If we get an arrangement with Comcast, ESPN, or Fox sports midwest we could reach a wider audience than the Peoria market which I think could help us with recruiting.

Indeed! To go along with the new on-campus facilities, back-to-back-to-back 22-win seasons and postseason wins, sold-out games, and quality wins over "name" programs.

I really need to put this red stuff down for a bit before it makes me sick with anticipation!
