  • Daniel West

Anybody know the story (sorry if this has already been discussed here)?

  • #2
Basically Daniel West's grades are not where they should be and Bradley pulled the scholorship offer to him. This was discussed but I'm not sure how to locate the old thread.

Everyone I talked to and every Bradley fan I know feels the same way.
We were all anxious and excited to see Daniel West play here at Bradley, and continue the great string of players from Michigan that over the years has included Chet Walker, LC Bowen, and even Brandyn Heemskerk!
But the grades issue cannot be denied, and I guess Daniel needed to show improvement over the summer, and it didn't happen.
We all wish him the best and hope things turn out well for him.

Don't forget Alex McNutt (sp). He made everybody forget about a guy named Westendorf.

Oh and lest we forget Ernie Thompson (6'3" jumping jack) out of Saginaw and Willie Betts (6'5") out of River Rouge! Those were the days!

A couple notes on ex-BU recruit Daniel West...

He should get some notice this year as his team, Saginaw HS, is rated #14 nationally!!

                    14. Saginaw (Saginaw, Mich.) 25-1 (21)
                    Head Coach: Lou Dawkins

Before he heads off to Michigan St., Draymond Green will try and lead No. 14 Saginaw (Saginaw, Mich.) to another Class A state title.

The defending state Class A champion Trojans remain the team to beat in Michigan with three starters returning from the title club. Anchoring the roster is 6-foot-7 all-stater Draymond Green, a Michigan State recruit who averaged 25 points, 13 rebounds and six assists as a junior. Returning in the backcourt are point guard Daniel West (6-1), a Bradley recruit with junior norms of 10 points, nine assists and six steals a game, plus 6-1 junior Mike Green (11 ppg). Also back is sixth man Will Marlow (6-2). Others expected to contribute are 6-2 sophomore Christian Dawkins and 6-3 senior Courtney Washington."

Chicago Whitney Young (#12), Simeon (#19), and Marshall (#29) are also ranked.

In the Regional Rankings, Saginaw is ranked #3 in the Midwest

Simeon #3), Marshall (#6), and Hales (#14) are also listed.

A new premium article on Michigan Preps, says this about Daniel West....

                        Preseason Ranking:
                        Saginaw HS #1

"KEY CONTRIBUTORS –There were times a year ago when I thought that senior point guard Daniel West, Jr. was the best player on the floor for Saginaw High. He went from being a decent D-1 prospect as an off guard to a terrific mid to high D-1 point guard. Then Bradley came riding in on a Trojan horse and got a verbal commit from West. Then West ended up with some issues off the floor and now West is not headed for Peoria. One thing is for sure. West can really distribute the basketball."

There is another new article on Daniel West......

By the way, West's Saginaw HS LOST this big matchup vs. Saginaw Arthur Hill HS, 63-56

"Saginaw HS vs. Arthur Hill HS"

"This is easily the biggest game of the season so far. There have been some good ones, but when Arthur Hill visits Saginaw High at 7:30 on Monday ii what will surely shake things up. These teams are considered two of the top squads in the state, and they are the last two programs to win Class A State Titles. Saginaw is lead by Bradley-bound PG Daniel West and Michigan State commit Draymond Green, who is back in the Trojan lineup after serving a short suspension.

Trojan Coach Lou Dawkins has been quick to point out that his team is not a one man show. Senior G Daniel West has been making quite a name for himself this season, and G Courtney Washington just put up 39 points against Flint Northwestern. Junior G Mike Green is another sensational talent that does many things well and hasn't even come close to his potential yet.

Saginaw has beaten Detroit Country Day, Midland and Detroit Northwestern, so they have faced decent talent. Even with the outstanding talent that Country Day has this year, Arthur Hill will surely be their biggest challenge yet.

The Arthur Hill Lumberjacks are coming off a HUGE win over Romulus who is considered another one of the top teams in the state. Before that, they crushed a good Mt. Pleasant team and beat a nice Flint S.W.A. team. But, their early season 2-point loss to Muskegon Heights left many fans wondering. Was this a fluke? Is Muskegon Heights that good? Is Arthur Hill over rated?

Romulus was in a similar situation recently. Everyone knew they were good, but when they beat Detroit Pershing, we all knew they were a special team. Many experts consider Romulus to be a serious contender for a state championship. So, when Arthur Hill took them down this weekend, it sent a strong statement to the rest of Michigan that the Lumberjacks are for real.

Coach Greg McMath knows how to get it done, and he has the talent to make a serious title run this year. 6'4 senior F Latreze Mushatt has been powerful and he will surely have to help defend Draymond Green, who has a 3" height advantage on him. McMath will probably count on 6'6 junior Mike Schaaf, who is a big-time football QB recruit, to body-up Green on the inside. Schaaf is not a completely polished player yet, but he did put in the final shot to beat Romulus, and he is certainly skilled enough to be a serious threat. Senior PG Tyree Wooten may be playing himself into a college scholarship. If he continues to produce the way he has, some of the smaller colleges in the Midwest will be fighting for him. Sophomore G Maurice Jones and junior F Omari Humes (another big football recruit) have also been contributing quality play this season and will undoubtedly play key roles in this game.

The match-up could go either way, but the edge probably goes to the defending state champs. They have been scoring A LOT of points, and they have absolutely dismantled opponents so far. Arthur Hill won't surprise them, but they certainly have a shot at taking down the number one team in the state. If you live anywhere near Saginaw, you might want to join all of the college scouts, and check this one out."

Because we are Bradley University, we have pride in our athletic and academic reputation, and we don't take garbage.
