  • Sports gambling scandal now linked to college games, including at least one Missouri Valley game

This is a long article about a sports gambling scandal that involves alleged point shaving by a professional gambler named Shane Hennen. - https://www.si.com/college-basketbal...ege-basketball

This Sports Illustrated article by Michael Rosenberg and Pat Forde claim it is:
"what appears to be one of the most pervasive point-shaving scandals in North American sports history"

“U.S. Attorney Carolyn Pokorny of the Eastern District of New York vouched for "substantial evidence” that Hennen was involved in “illicit financial transactions and fraudulent sports wagers totaling millions of dollars,” resulting “in potentially millions of dollars’ worth of illicit profits and money-laundering transactions.”

The U.S. Attorney’s office letter says, “the proof of his guilt is overwhelming,” and includes “witnesses, phone records, financial records and betting records.” The government has not released most of that evidence.
The government says “numerous” Hennen schemes were “fraudulent.”

And it also involves college games-
Sources familiar with elements of the federal and NCAA inquiries tell SIthat authorities are investigating potential links between the same gambling ring and wagering on at least nine college games across last season and this season. Investigators have flagged unusual wagering on games involving at least five college teams—and they are prepared for that number to increase.

Several gamblers have already been arrested and charged, and investigators are continuing to look into who else was involved, including possibly players who were "point shaving"....
Hennen bet heavily on point spreads of college games. One of the games that Hennen cashed in big on was a game between Drake and Murray State last year.

Hennen posted a number of these large bets on his Instagram account....
In February 2024, Hennen recorded a video of himself in a casino sportsbook...
He tilted the camera toward his left hand, which held a $75,000 betting slip for Drake to cover a 9.5-point spread against Murray State.
Drake jumped out to a 22-point first-half lead and won by 23. After the game, Hennen posted the betting slip on Instagram—but this time, he posted the dollar amount and blocked out the game he wagered on.

Curious does not necessarily mean criminal. SI did not obtain any information indicating the aforementioned games were rigged. (If Hennen did rig any of those games, the culprit would presumably be a compromised player or players on the team he bet against.)

Here is the game mentioned that presumably is being investigated for possible point shaving. - https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...urray-st-drake
Drake beat Murray State 95-72 on Feb. 18, 2024. Drake was a 9.5 point favorite, and won by 23.
There is one curious stat... one of Murray State's top scorers had a really bad game that day.

Did our society really collectively think that making sports gambling legal was going to be harmless? Why are we continuing to throw the wisdom of our fathers in the gutter and bring back vice after vice and think there will be no ill from it?

Frankly, this does not surprise me at all, and I would not be surprised if numerous such gambling rings and riggings are happening all over the country on a regular basis.

Too much money involved not to be fixed to some degree, and it wouldn't surprise me if 50% of the refs in all sports were being blackmailed or bribed to 'manage' the scores. It's a multi-billion dollar industry built on greed and corruption, but that's just my humble opinion. That being said, I have dabbled with Draft Kings myself, so I'm not passing any character judgment on anyone who does gamble, just the industry that runs it.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

I would be looking into the officials also because they can help a lot into deciding these games. Legalizing sports betting was one of the worst mistakes they could have made in this country. This is way too hard to control.

I hate all the gambling ads everywhere. It’s so toxic. Of course this was bound to happen.

4 players at the University of New Orleans who have been suspended since January 27, are reportedly under federal investigation related to the sports gambling scandal. - https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...caa-violations

Multiple gambling industry sources told ESPN's David Purdum that a betting ring under federal investigation also placed bets on at least two New Orleans men's basketball games this season. The Dec. 28 game at McNeese State and the Jan. 11 game against Southeastern Louisiana attracted bets from the sportsbook accounts associated with the betting ring, according to the sources. The point spread moved significantly against the Privateers in three other games this season.
.... the ring also placed bets on games involving Temple, North Carolina A&T, Eastern Michigan and Mississippi Valley State. The bettors also have ties to two NBA betting cases, including one thatled to former Toronto Raptor Jontay Porter being banned from theNBA.

UNO is 4-25, and 2-16 in the Southland Conference, and they have lost all 8 games since the 4 players were suspended.
The 4 suspended players are leading scorer James White (19.2 ppg), Jah Short (9.2 ppg), Dae Dae Hunter (8.2 ppg), and Jahmond Vincent (7.8 ppg). All 4 have been starters for much of the season. The University has not commented further about the suspended players, other than characterizing the reason for the suspensions as "unspecified violations".

Last week, it was reported that Fresno State has dismissed one starting player and suspended 2 other starters related to a gambling investigation. All 3 players were averaging double-digits. - https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...etting-inquiry

Got to wonder just how much deeper this goes.
