  • 2024-25 MVC predictions

Here is the first college basketball blog site I've seen predicting the All-MVC 1st team for 2024-25 - https://x.com/MidMajorcentral/status...79473361965129
    - Tytan Anderson, Northern Iowa
    - Cooper Schwieger, Valparaiso
    - Darius Hannah, Bradley
    - Duke Deen, Bradley
    - JaCobi Wood, Murray State
    - Elijah Elliot, Southern Illinois

While I applaud the research and work Mid-Major Central does, I have to disagree with one or two of their selections.
Tytan Anderson is a good pick. He averaged 11.9 ppg and 7.1 rpg last year, 3rd on the team behind Bowen Born and Nate Heise. But with Born and Heise gone, he could improve on those numbers a bit.
Duke Deen is a shoe-in. He will be a 1st team preseason and post-season pick, barring injury, and is a strong candidate for POY.
Nice to see Darius Hannah getting recognition. I hope this pick is correct, but his lack of a perimeter game might keep him off the 1st team
Cooper Schwieger is a solid player, and one of the top returning scorers in the MVC with all the transfers. He should put up solid numbers again, but Valpo has to improve significantly. I just don't see a player from a bottom 3 or 4 team getting many 1st team votes.
JaCobi Wood is a good pick for 1st team, too, if Murray State doesn't fold down the stretch like they have the last 2 seasons.
But I don't get the Elijah Elliott pick. He is a senior transfer to SIU from UT-Rio Grande Valley. He will be at his 4th school in 4 years. He started at Division II Oklahoma Christian, then spent a year at Mount St. Mary's, where he averaged a meager 1.5 ppg and was 1-8 from three for the season. Then he transferred to UTRGV last year where he averaged 16.6 ppg, but shot just 36% overall, and 23% from three. He got his points on a large volume of shots every game (16 shot attempts per game). By comparison, Duke Deen and Connor Hickman lead Bradley, each with slightly more than 11 shot attempts per game. SIU will have other better shooters, and in a much better conference like the MVC which focuses on defense, I don't see a 6' guard averaging double digits if he shoots that poorly.

Any thoughts? Do Christian Davis or Almar Atlason have a chance to be All-MVC?

Perhaps they have a chance if Davis makes the 3rd year leap a lot of players make and becomes a high level 3 and D guy. And if Almar shoots it like we expect? We shall see. But I appreciate your breakdown of the current list. Thank you. I’ll watch closely.

Here's my prediction, if BU wins the Myrtle Beach Invitational, we win the Valley and the MVC tournament.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Tommy - I think we win both regardless. I just hope we're focused out of the gates and the guys don't think they're better than us Braves fans know they are!
Stay hungry and healthy are the 2 biggest keys.

These out-of-conf. games will be super critical this season for a shot at an At-Large bid, which is becoming harder and harder for this league to get credibility and respect. A lot also depends on how strong the rest of the league is, and right now it feels very weak.

Love your optimism, LB! I agree!

The Braves are still loaded, and that's even without knowing if (or how) the newcomers will contribute.

Zek, Hannah, Duke, Davis - All guys who should garner end-of-season All-MVC awards.
Atlason, Burch, Thomas, Dillon should provide some punch and plenty of scoring to fill the holes that Hick and Mal left.

I would pick Burch to be the MVC 6th man of the year, but with our depth, our bench should be pretty strong and his impact may get overshadowed.
I'll say it now that someone on BU will get the MVC 6th man of the year.

Breakout players - ? all six are apparently just wild guesses... but Skobalj? Starting big man for UIC?
He's already been ay UIC three full seasons, he's going on 23 y/o, so we know what he's got - and he's a 1-dimensional player.
He can hit open 3's, but I have never seen a hint that he wants to play defense.
He got EXACTLY the same number of rebounds in the 2023-24 season (111) as DUKE DEEN did
(how the heck does a 6-8 big man get just 3 rpg?) and the TOTAL number of assists , blocks and FT's COMBINED
that the guy had last year was roughly the same as the number of assists alone that Darius Hannah had.

I can DEFINITELY see 1 or both of our sophs being breakout players (Almar and the O-Show, Burch)
Looking fw to seeing what C Dilly can do, especially from beyond the arc.
