  • 10 year anniversary.....looking back...

This is undoubtedly a painful topic, but worthy of remembering, because in some sense this was the BEGINNING of seeing the light at the end of a very miserable tunnel, and we need to be sure we never make these mistakes again - (btw- how's Bradley's enrollment doing Dr. Standifird?)

    - Spring 2014, after three consecutive seasons of the most horrific basketball Bradley had ever seen, and the most incompetent mismanagement of the entire Bradley Athletic Department, Kirk Wessler wrote a column placing ALL the blame on the players and none on the coaches, staff or administration-

Keep in mind that the only decent, DI caliber players Geno Ford ever had (Dyricus, Lemon, Egolf, Taylor Brown) were actually recruited by his predecessor.

    - the one actual DI prospect Geno had gotten a commitment from for 2014, saw the miserable quality of coaching during the 2013-14 season and decommitted - https://www.pjstar.com/story/sports/...7/41676200007/

    - Then, despite Wessler's phony praise of the coaching staff and administration, the really bad news started to leak out- Board members started quitting and yanking their financial gifts, massive financial shortfalls were exposed that Dr. Glasser had tried to hide from the Board, then enrollment tanked

Then the 2014-15 season got underway and Bradley started stinking up the court, losing to the lowest of opponents, UT-Arlington, Robert Morris,
UA-Little Rock and scoring in the 40's and low 50's every game.

Fans finally got in the ears of the remaining Board members and by Jan. 2015, the pink slips were issued & we were on the way to that end of the tunnel!

There is value in revisiting history to ensure the same mistakes do not happen again in the future.
Thinking is the hardest work, that is why so few people do it. -Henry Ford

Yeah...I've been in college for a while now and I'm pretty sure that awesomest is not a word. -Andrew E.

I wasn't following BU Basketball that closely during those very down years! I do remember them taking on top 3 ranked Michigan at Carver in 2012 and giving Michigan a tough game as Walt Lemon had some great takeaways in that game! However, I never realized how low Bradley Ball had gone! I only remember reading about special games against Michigan and Michigan State at Carver! At least back then we could get good Michigan teams to play in Peoria!!!! Of course I know now Brian Wardle came and totally uplifted the program! Now that I'm retired, I can follow BU much more closely! My point I want to make is that other programs besides BU have fallen into the tank! I mean Great historical programs like Bradley! My first thought is how low Louisville has Fallen since the Days of Denny Crum! I met him once on a plane and I mentioned BU Basketball and his response was " Good Team". So other teams had also taken falls like Bradley! But things can change as Evidenced by when Loyola joined the MVC, they were pretty dismal...like High 200's RPI from what I read in article 10 years ago and then of course they made the final 4 in 2018! I am Happy though that Brian Wardle has brought our program to a point of us having enough talent that he recruited to be a viable team in always having a chance to win the MVC!!!! Can he go further though that we could be a sweet 16 or even a final 4 team? That has yet to be determined!!!!

Good reminder, Yoda and thanks for posting. One name that Geno did recruit that turned out pretty good that you left out was Donte Thomas, but oddly enough he wasn't any good for Geno, but was awesome for BW! Coaching matters, baby!

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Right- Donte is one of my favorites, but he tore his knee up his senior year of high school, and every other bit of recruiting interest would have been gone.
Geno might have even backed out except he had nobody else coming in anyway.
Donte’s whole 1st year at Bradley was basically a rehab year where Donte could only play 10 min/game.
I wish instead of playing meaningless minutes that year, averaging just 2.5ppg, that he’d have redshirted in 2014-15, then we’d have had him in 2018-19 when we won the MVC & went to the NCAA.

Everyone seems to be forgetting that Geno did recruit Josh Cunningham, who at the time was a top 100 recruit and had multiple P6 offers. Probably one of the best recruits Bradley has had in recent memory.

Well not sure how much Geno did (Josh's mom was a Bradley alum and it seemed like that way a major influence).

Think that was all his mom and him wanting to go to the school she went to

Cunningham's recruitment was also helped by the Braves' assistant coach Chin Coleman, who had been the head coach with the Mac Irvin Fire program, which Cunningham played for.

Coleman was the lead recruiter in bringing Josh to Bradley.
