Bradley 72 - Illini 68 Final
???It??™s awful hard,??™??™ said Illini freshman guard D.J. Richardson, the former Central High School guard who played prep school ball a few miles from here and fought back tears outside the locker room. ???It??™s a hometown thing. It??™s bragging rights.??™

With all the problems BU has had lately with Crawford; Buycks;and Williams they probably felt like it was time to go after a sure thing rather then wait to see if West would qualify ; sounds to me like he did not do the school work his jr. year so how do you trust him to do it when he is in college.

PS.........someone tell Shaun it's time to up-grade the scholarship grid again!???People say, ???Forget last year', but I want our guys to remember that one, because that will not happen again. We will be much better.??? Geno Ford, 9/22/12

Can someone please give me a link to just one mention of Daniel West playing AAU ball this past summer, or a mention of how he did.
In case you do try, and find that there are none, then maybe try to find some source that confirms West is the #1 PG in Michigan, as the Saginaw coach claims.....it just is not true.
Most people think this kid who is going to Ohio State is a little better
fid=2410&mid=95749187&sid=1015&tid=95749187&style= 2&Override=1
and this kid too
West may be among the Top 5 PG's in Michigan, but if someone can confirm any source saying he's #1, I'd love to see it. Either way, I kinda trust our staff on this one.

I have wondered for along time how good is West. The reasobn for this is his teammate is listed as the #1 player in MI and barely makes it into the top 100 players nationally. having grown up 20 miles from Bay City I check out a lot of the papers up that way as well as the Detroit FP. The Free Press has had West only in the top twenty in the state and has put other poiint guards ahead of West which then makes one wonder is he as good as they say. I am not saying he isn't good but w/ the grade situation and a chance to get a true combo guard that sounds like he may be better then West you have to do it. Only time will tell if this is a bad, good, or great move.

How come our mods are contributing so much to ISU news, i.e. Sampay, and not about our OWN players (or former players), i.e. Daniel West? I want to know the skinny on Daniel West. If Sampay is in trouble, great. Bad news for ISU. I think losing West is bad. I want to know more about THAT. And I don't want it sugarcoated either. We have been very high on this kid for a long time. He didn't suddenly get worse from yesterday to today. Losing him isn't a good thing, and it will depend on what he turns out to be and what we do with the scholarship to determine the long-term effects of pulling his scholarship. Do I trust the staff? Yes. I would just like to know more, and usually this is the place where I come to get BU news.Onward and Upward!

BB the news is quite clear....BradleyFans is committed to bringing you the news you just can't find anywhere else!
West played virtually no ball all summer, spent the entire time trying to take courses and improve his standing, and yet did poorly enough to cause our coaching staff to back off.
Do you want another DeAaron Williams scenario?
The kid's coach did not refute the facts, that he is not going to qualify,
Above, I challenged you to find some word on West from over the summer. There is NONE.
Find someone who ranks the kid in even the top 20 or 25 in the state....there are none.
I think Daniel West would have been a fine recruit, except I am bothered by his absence from the AAU scene this summer, and the word that he is having very serious academic problems. Are you suggesting we should not trust our coaching staff on this decision?
Note the wording of the news release:
"West’s junior year in the classroom placed him in a tenuous position as far as achieving his NCAA eligibility.
So his agreement to Bradley was voided"
So the kid violated/broke the agreement he clearly must have made in order to receive the scholarship.
If the kid doesn't do his part, then what's a coach to do?

We report what we know. I've said before, and I'll clarify for new viewers, none of us "moderators" have any connection with Bradley or the Athletic Department, and we have no inside source of information to get news whenever we want it. So we'll have to take the staff at their word that the Daniel West case was simply academic failure, which Bradley has no control over. I suspect they knew this problem was brewing since last spring, though I can understand why that shouldn't be reported. Probably Bradley encouraged the summer work. I am happy to hear that the staff is so closely involved with the academics of each recruit. And the quotes from Daniel West's coach suggest that he and Daniel accept and were not surprised by Bradley's action. There would certainly be no reason for Lou Dawkins to "sugarcoat" the issue, and I don't think Bradley has, either.
I have heard that they feel the guy the just got (Eddren McCain) is an upgrade at PG over any other 2008 recruit we had or were after.

I may be accused of trying to put lipstick on a pig, but here goes . . .
This doesn't bother me too much. First, on balance, JL has proven to be a recruiter whose decision making is practically beyond reproach.
Second, I see a bit of a pattern here. A few months ago we find out that Theron Wilson has signed his LOI and everyone wonders what that means about DW. Come to find out that Les has yanked BU's offer. I have a sneaking suspicion that Les looked at those two, Wilson and Williams, and thought I like Theron better anyway, DW still hasn't gotten his act together, I'm going with Theron. And from all I hear, Theron might actually wind up being better at BU that DW would have been.
Some on here immediately wondered about West when the McCain commit was announced. They were right: just like in the DW case, come to find out JL revoked the offer (which seems from his coach's comments like exactly what happened, not the other way around). I'm not the talent evaluator Les is, so I feel comfortable that he looked at the two, McCain and West, liked McCain better anyway, sees West hasn't gotten his act together, says I'm going with McCain.
So we trade the best pg in Michigan for what many claim to be the best pg in the South. McCain is a good student, so failing to qualify would at least not be attributable to bad effort in the classroom.
Fine by me.

we all want the freshest "inside" information, but I think our mods do a great job of balancing scoops and tact. a premature story can cause damage to the team, which is something none of us want! (hehe, well maybe Dannycooksey wouldn't mind ... )
We can speculate as to what may have been the 'real' reason, although considering how up front the program has been with less then positive news in the past (i.e. Ray Brown, Fears, etc.) I dont know why they would just now start trying to spin stories. If a high-major swooped in and stole D West, why wouldn't they be up front about that?
I dont know ... I love having the inside scoop, but I never want it at the expense of my team. the Mods do a great job in my opinion and if they get some really juicy inside info that they can't share, i respect their need for discretion!
Kudos to BF.com mods; you guys are the best!
