  • NCAA to reassess the NET

College basketball broadcaster John Fanta, who does Big East games for Fox Sports reports that-
Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman says she has been told by the NCAA that there may be a review of the NET in the offseason. “I think there are lots of questions within the membership about what the most important factor is in NET. There is some mystery about how it’s computed.”

I'd like to think that means they will readjust the analytics of the NET formula to reward better teams that weren't able to schedule Quad 1 opponents (like Indiana State, Bradley, etc). But I actually suspect it means the exact opposite. In view of the Mountain West getting 6 teams in the NCAA Tournament (more than the ACC, Big East, Pac-12, and every other conference except the Big 10, Big 12, and SEC, they will probably figure some way to make it impossible for mid-major conferences to get multiple bids.
Note that the Big East, Val Ackerman's conference, got only 3 teams in the NCAA Tournament, their fewest in years.
Some of their coaches are already bitching that they should have gotten more - https://www.nj.com/sports/2024/03/da...performed.html

More Big East coaches whining about being left out (St. John's Rick Pitino and Providence's Kim English) - https://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa...4e7bac3a38161c

I read that. They said that at there request of the Big East. Had that been the MVC requesting that they would have ignored it

Changes usually mean worse outcomes IMO. Who knows if anything will come of this. It does appear the Big East has a solid basis to complain at this point though, all three of their teams that got bids are in the S16. But someone had to miss out due to all the bid stealers this year, and imo the Big East just didn't do enough to get more of their teams in this year. IMO the only really bad decision the selection committee made this year was putting Virginia in.

Now it's the ACC Commissioner bitching and moaning about only getting 4 teams in the NCAA Tournament, and demanding changes be made so they can get more teams in, regardless of whether they deserved more (which they didn't) - https://twitter.com/NicoleAuerbach/s...29127212994864

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Let's just give EVERY power 5 school a bid, give them a first round bye, Let them decide which bracket they want to be in, who they'd like to play, let them decide what time they will play, give them a few thousand dollars appearance fees, let them decide which referee's they want and give them the parking and concession profits. Maybe, just maybe, then they will stop complaining......but I doubt it.
