  • Another huge hit for Belmont- Cade Tyson enters the transfer portal - https://twitter.com/VerbalCommits/st...65720040460340

Belmont has now lost their top 3 scorers and 3 best players, Ja'Kobi Gillespie (17.2 ppg), Malik Dia (16.9 ppg), and Cade Tyson (16.2 ppg).
    What is going on?
Transfers and (potential) coaching changes could hurt the top 6 teams from this past year-
1st place Indiana State- Josh Schertz rumored to be leaving
2nd place Drake- Coach DeVries leaving and most of their key players done or transferring
3rd place Bradley- only losing Malevy Leons, so far
4th place tie Belmont- Top 3 players transferring- Ja'Kobi Gillespie, Malik Dia, and Cade Tyson
4th place tie UNI- Nate Heise, MIchael Duax, Landon Wolf, Cole Henry, and Drew Daniel, Ege Peksari transferring so far
6th place SIU- Bryan Mullins fired, Xavier Johnson done, and multiple other key payers transferring

    • I think most players transfer up in the portal because they’ll get a better chance to play in the NCAA Tournament, even if it might mean coming off the bench. Most players aren’t getting a pot of gold when it comes to money.

I thought Cade Tyson was a terrific player. I was hoping he would stay. Would have been good for the Valley

The Valley is going to be wide open next year.

Bad overall for the strength of the conference but if we can keep most of our players we would have to be the favorite next year.

          • Illinois State's leading scorer in both of the last 2 seasons, Darius Burford, has entered the transfer portal. He has one season of eligibility left - https://twitter.com/VerbalCommits/st...58519817200054

            • The Valley has been decimated. If I’m the commissioner of the Valley, I’m fighting for contracts to try to lessen the impact of all this. It’s not sustainable and basically mid-majors are dead. It’s the big boys and everyone else. I don’t know what the mountain west did this year, but we need to look into that too. Probably helps being on the west coast, where the PAC conference is the only power and being destroyed itself.

It's getting even more severe than I thought it would. Last year approximately 38% of all D-1 basketball players entered the transfer portal. Will be interesting to see how many do so this year.

This is really getting kind of crazy. How many kids can actually move up? Are there really going to be that many open spots available? I guess if the power teams graduate a couple seniors and jettison a few of their players that never worked out, that is around 5 players leaving a year for them. Let's say there is about 80 teams "above" the mid-major level. That would be about 400 open spots on those teams a year. However, those teams are going to have some freshmen coming in. Last year there were 1,500 in the transfer portal. Seems to me that most of those transfer portal players will be either making horizontal moves or going down. Likely there are only a couple hundred or less actual players that are moving up and then having success like Rienk, Domask, and Jones etc this year. Still, it is a lot of players, and MVC is hit hard because it is just good enough to get some great players.
Thinking is the hardest work, that is why so few people do it. -Henry Ford

Yeah...I've been in college for a while now and I'm pretty sure that awesomest is not a word. -Andrew E.

You make a good point. I think most players in the Div 1 portal really don't " move up". They go laterally. To clarify most players in Div. 2 are moving up but they move to the mid - major range. I was going to run a study on that last year but didn't. I think this year I might. I think the players like Rienk moving from Mid-major to one the Power Corruption conferences is the exception rather than the rule.

almost every Big Ten school got better by poaching a mid-major player, and doing so especially benefitted all of the top teams
-Nebraska- Rienk, Wilcher, Williams, Allick, Gary - pretty much their entire starting lineup
-Illinois - Domask, Harmon- plus Dainja, Shannon, Guerrier from bigger schools
                    -Purdue - Jones
                    -Iowa - Krikke, Brauns
                    -Minnesota - Hawkins, Mitchell, Garcia
                    -Wisconsin - McGee, Klesmit, Lindsey
                    -Michigan - Llewellyn, Jackson
                    -Ohio State - Battle, Mahaffey
-Michigan State - their top scorer Tyson Walker (18.4 ppg)

It is likely a lot of mid-major kids have a chip on their shoulder and have something to prove as to why they weren't
recruited by the bigger schools. Check the roster of almost every top P-5, they almost all have key mid-major kids,
even Kentucky (leading scorer Reeves) and UConn (leading scorer Newton), Iowa State (leading rebounder Tre King)

You are right. I have said all season the Big Ten should send a thank you to the MVC for helping them to get better. However I was talking total numbers.

I heard someone mention regarding college football that P5 coaches that are good at development should go after 3 star or lower prospects to benefit essentially from the chip/work ethic. Makes some sense, if things come easy for a player might be more ego and less effort. Might explain why one of our transfers didn't work out.

That is why it does not bother me to recruit Div 2 players if they have potential.

Got to have the ability though. Pretty risky taking talent that is unproven against D-1 talent. However, shooters generally have the skill, just a matter of adjusting to the difference in play.

                            • D-2 players that have proven at that level that they can shoot, rebound and handle the ball are definitely ready to move up to D-1 basketball. I think playing on a winning team is important plus there are many other things they can be evaluated on and off the court.
Hoping we are able to find good fits for our program. I also think it is imperative to get players to commit immediately in order to get the best ones available before they choose another school.
