  • SI ISU B Article

This is my first post though I have follwed you for years.
My first BU game was the 1958 Frosh v Varsity scrimage.
Chet Walker was a freshman and I have been hooked since.
I have lived in Bradenton, Florida since I retired 10 years ago
and in this mornings local paper there was a Sports Illustrated
article on ISUB written in light of the BU OT loss there. There is
very little about the game or BU except one comment that
may make many of you cringe. Very good article on the coach, team
and town make up and history.

Pretty good article. It's a little overly long and a lot of unnecessary details, but typical of Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde.
The one line you were referring to was this about Jayson Kent, "Kent was essentially told he had no role at Bradley, according to Schertz."

That fits with the theme of the article that is summarized by this Josh Schertz quote: “We have a lot of guys in our locker room that are They Said You Can’t kind of guys."
But that may be a bit exaggerated in Jayson Kent's case, from the information I've heard. First, Jayson is a wonderful kid, and everyone from the coaches to the players liked him. But, Jayson was not very productive in his 2 seasons at Bradley.
      Here were his stats- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...89/jayson-kent

He played over 20 minutes per game his sophomore season, and started more than half the games. So anyone who says he wasn't given a chance is not accurate. As can be seen, his scoring and rebounding were not good, and his shooting percentages were awful.
After the 2021-22 season, he was told simply that his playing time for the next season (2022-23) might not increase unless his production increased. Bradley at that point appeared to have their entire starting lineup returning the next year, plus Zek Montgomery was emerging as a big guard/wing, like Kent, and Ja'Shon Henry had just announced he was returning to Bradley to play a 5th year, giving Bradley a crowded front court with Mast, Leons, and Hannah. And Bradley had a commitment from Christian Davis, to go along with guards Connor Hickman, Terry Roberts, and Ville Tahvanainen who were believed to be returning for 2022-23 (Terry Roberts later decided to transfer and Ville did not return). There didn't appear to be any extra playing time opening up for Jayson.
Jayson decided to transfer to Indiana State, where his friend and former high school teammate, Robbie Avila, was. He actually played less his first year at Indiana State than he did at Bradley, and his scoring and rebounding numbers were not as good (see stats link) as they were at Bradley. So that appears to suggest that Josh Schertz had less confidence in him than Brian Wardle did. But to Jayson's credit, he has elevated his level of play tremendously this year, and is deserving of his pick to the All-MVC 2nd team.

Agreed. Can't deny Kent's performance at all this year, but like you showed in your post, moving on (no matter if he was told less minutes, or to transfer) from Kent was the correct decision by BU.

Thanks for taking the time to put all my thoughts into words Da Coach. You saved me a lot of typing . Seeing Kent be successful at InSU is nice. But I don't mull on him leaving BU.

Welcome Fan1958! Just like you I followed this board for years before posting. You picked a great place to retire in Bradenton (my dad is in Sarasota) and he loves it there. And thanks coach for pointing out the misinformation by the writer regarding Kent.
