  • Another academic scandal- this time at Memphis

When North Carolina went through their academic scandal a decade ago, the NCAA looked the other way, swept it under the rug, and essentially refused to penalize them.

Now there is an emerging academic scandal at Memphis - https://bluffcitymedia.co/malcolm-da...demic-scandal/

It will be interesting to watch and see how far this scandal extends. It is being investigated internally for now, and only 1 player has been acknowledged to be involved. But it's hard to believe it would be that isolated. Memphis has already been the subject of 2 previous NCAA investigations and penalties in head coach Penny Hardaway's six seasons there. Does Memphis have enough clout like UNC to get away with repeated slaps on the wrist like North Carolina? Or will the NCAA finally do what they are supposed to do and enforce their rules to deter cheating?

Memphis is still viewed by some of the "big boys" as a relatively unwelcome, emerging mid-major...
They will not get the same soft treatment UNC got. NCAA's been trying since Penny Hardaway got there to throw the hammer down on him.

Memphis Acknowledges Letter Alleging Widespread Potential NCAA Violations in Men’s Basketball Program
Head coach Penny Hardaway is purported to have personal involvement in the accusations of illegal player recruitment and academic violations. - https://www.si.com/college-basketbal...caa-violations

And in a bizarre move- with less than 3 weeks before the official start of practice, and 2 months before the first games, head coach Penny Hardaway fires most of his staff -

Neither Hardaway nor the school are gave a reason for the firings.

Here are some of the NCAA's allegations of improper payments and academic fraud against Memphis and against Penny Hardaway personally - https://x.com/HitmenHoops/status/1831533306115953011

It seems maybe Hardaway won't be at Memphis too much longer.
I suspect these kinds of blatant violations probably happen a lot at many of the top programs. North Carolina admitted to a lot of the same stuff and there was negligible punishment.
