Northern Iowa Guard Dismissed from Team

Culliver had a serious knee injury at the end of last season at juco. He still wasn't back to 100%.
UNI does lack experience at the point guard position, and their main PG, Kwadzo Ahelegbe is now recovering from a knee injury himself. So this could be a tough loss, but it's possible Culliver wouldn't have been 100% by the start of the season, anyway.

Yes, he did travel with them, and with Kwadzo injured, most of the point guard in Thailand was played by Brooks McKowen, who is already graduated and no longer on the Panthers.
So to dismiss Culliver instantly means he did something significant and irreversible, and indeed that is what happened.
The Des Moines Register this morning is reporting the answer to these questions.
"No details were given, but according an Omaha police report, Culliver was arrested Aug. 4 on charges of possession of a firearm, flight to avoid arrest, unlawful transportation and criminal mischief.
According to the report, an officer was responding to a call regarding possible gunfire. When the officer arrived, a blue Oldsmobile Cutlass was spotted traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle fled police until crashing.
A search found shell casings on the car floor and an assault rifle in the front seat.
Another vehicle was found and the rear window was apparently struck by gunfire.
Culliver and another man were taken into custody. The gun possession charge on Culliver was later dropped because of false information."
August 4 was BEFORE the team went to Thailand, so it surprises me that they still let him go after this!

Just an FYI regarding that article in the DM Register. Culliver was IN Bangkok Thailand on August 4th. He left with the team on like July 30th. Their first game was on August 7th. I don't know how he was arrested on Aug. 4 when he was on another continent. The issue I am hearing about is something that took place months ago (many months at that). It has supposedly resurfaced, and Coach Jake was quick to pull the trigger in letting him go. From all indications, the staff liked the kid...the team liked the kid...and he would have played a reasonable role with this team. Now, Josten and Ahelgbe will play the primary minutes at the point, which will open up more time for Brown, Reed, and Dunham at the 2 and 3 spots.

FINISHED two years of JUNIOR COLLEGE in spring of 2007 then enrolled in fall of 2007 at UNI ....
...as a juco kid, he would have then been expected to have just two years of eligibilty left starting in fall of 2007 -- and yet....
Here we are six years later and now Matt Culliver is still just now a senior at Texas A&M International.
Thus - his clock - even if he took a redshirt year, should have run out at the end of the 2009-2010 season but he's still playing three years beyond that!

I think this institution is NCAA DII. If I am not mistaken, NCAA DII schools have a semester clock, that only counts when enrolled full time. If you take a year off, you are not losing anything. Perhaps I am wrong, but I know that was the rule in the past.

but after two full years of juco - he even enrolled the 1st semester of his junior year at UNI before leaving...that should have fully consumed 2 and a half years there - then he sits out four MORE years and enrolls at a D-II in fall of 2011 and gets two more years of eligibility - the guy must make Sam Singh look young...
