  • Chris Collins ejected with 1.7 seconds left in Northwestern loss to #2 ranked Purdue

Northwestern lost at Purdue last night 105-96 in overtime. But the story is that Northwestern coach Chris Collins finally couldn't take the lopsided foul call differential and unloaded on the officials with 1.7 seconds left in the overtime, and was ejected- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...ft-discrepancy
    Box score- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...meId/401600361

Northwestern is not known for excessive physical play, yet they were called for 31 personal fouls in the game, compared to just 15 for Purdue. Most of Northwestern's players played much of the game in foul trouble, and 3 of them fouled out. Purdue was 29-46 on free throws, while Northwestern was just 6-8. The 38 free throw differential was one of the largest differentials on record. Only 3 Northwestern players shot free throws, and their best player, Boo Buie, never got to the FT line at all.

Huge 'Cats fan here. And that officiating and foul differential was atrocious. Never seen anything like it.

That reminds me of the Missouri State @ BU game from 2020. I've never been so mad in my life sitting there watching the refs blow the whistle over 50 times. Absolute insanity and isn't even basketball when it gets to that point and it removes all the fun from watching the game.

The example given here is even worse than the game I just referenced because at least in that game the foul calling was even. 31 fouls on one team is insanity unless they were brawling through the entire game, and nobody, and I mean nobody goes to a basketball game wanting to see THAT and if I were emperor, that referee crew would never work again.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

It’s going to take a few more years, but I believe most sports will reduce and possibly eliminate most officials. Tennis has eliminated line officials in most major tournaments. Only the chair umpiring is needed. Baseball could easily function with one umpire. Home plate umpire is hard to get it right. How many calls are missed in a football game? I know many fans won’t like this happening, but there will be increased pressure by sports betting to get the calls right. Just like some players, some officials be bought by powerful people

From what I saw in the Bradley game last night I think the NCAA needs to hire better quality officials or set up a program for intense re-training before, during and after the season

              but wait a minute....
the only possibility of eliminating the umps or refs is IF you also have a high tech method of whistling the violations (like the line calls in tennis)
or if you have a huge, expensive crew manning a video-review compound like MLB does. There is NO WAY that can happen in college basketball.
Is every league going to have to run a video review center every night of the week to rule on out of bounds, goaltending, travel, lane violations, etc?
And how would fouls get called?

Makes you wonder if the B10 didn't want Purdue losing twice to NW. Especially in West Lafayette.

Agree. Think how long a game would be if someone had to review video after every call. It’s bad enough with the stoppages in play that we have now.

as noted earlier, I think the NCAA has to be more proactive with continued training, and regular evaluations where poor officials are actually removed from circulation.
