  • Arena concession stands

Love going to the Civic Center and cheering and supporting the Braves. Only gripe I have is the concession stands. Last two games I have attended I get two 7 oz. beers that is supposed to be seven dollars minus tax. Upon ready to pay each time the screen says 21.48. I usually give a tip, but to have the employee behind the stand give themselves a tip without even thinking twice about it is poor etiquette to me. When I asked the employee about this the only response I got was a shrug of their shoulders. So asked to see the manager on duty and they corrected the issue. If you are so inclined to give a tip, which I usually do then the prompt on the screen is there if you wish to tip.

Sounds like a shady concession stand employee to me.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

At the United Center concession stands, the monitor at payment displays suggested tip percentages, if wish to give a tip. If you use American Express as payment, you automatically receive a 10% discount. So, I always give the server 10% tip.
Personally, I wish we were more like Europe, where those servers are paid a living wage with benefits, not dependent upon tips. If one feels the service was good, a minimal tip (less than 5%) is sometimes given

I always tip the servers at the Civic Center at least 15-20%. I don’t think they are paid as well as the employees at the United Center that are unionized

I don't understand the point of tipping when you order at the counter? This happens at all kinds of restaurants, not just here at the civic center. It seems to really have blown up since the pandemic. I'm not a fan of tipping before I receive my product/service, isn't the tip supposed to be an appreciation/reward for good service?

I agree, tipping is for good service and food. When you are carrying out or purchasing at a counter a tip should not be expected.During covid I always tipped because you could not go inside so I felt from the lack of business it was important to tip those people. I always give 20% or more when dining inside but do not believe in tipping at the counter. Those workers need to be paid enough that just handing drinks to people over the counter does not justify a tip.Europe has it right in that you pay them a decent wage and no one gets a tip.

I think tipping in general has gotten absolutely rediculous. I’m not tipping for a $7 soda. What’s next tipping at Lowe’s??

Love your post JMG 76. I can remember my Econ classes at Bradley in 60s with Dr. Thorsen and Dr Linstomberg. Price of a product can reach a level on demand and supply curve when choice is pass!

How about the nachos and cheese this year being the prepackaged style? $7 for that? No. I'll pay $3 for them at area high school games, but expect better at Carver Arena.
