Missouri State has a comfortable lead over Florida Gulf Coast in the first round of the Paradise Jam.
And Belmont plays at #3 Arizona in a game that starts at 10 pm Central. Arizona is a 24.5 point favorite.
Valpo led for the just about all of the first 25 minutes of the game but the Illini outscored them 35-12 the rest of the game to win 87-64. Can't recall a game where both teams had over 50 rebounds, Illini 60-51, and both teams had single digit turnovers. Valpo also had just 4 assists and took 80 shots making 24, 5-19 from 3. For Valpo a couple of guys stat lines stood out. Isiah Stafford scored a game high 30 points and 0 assists. Jaxon Edwards had 0 points on 0-12 shooting, had 15 rebounds, 3 blocks and 0 assists.
The Bears never trailed in the game winning it 70-61. They shot 16-25 in the 1st half, 8-13 from 3, leading 42-29. Their biggest lead was 59-39 with about 12:00 left and FGCU could only get as close as 7 late. Matthew Lee led the Bears with 20 points while Donovan Clay and Alston Mason each had 17
Arizona never trailed in the contest and beat Belmont 100-68. Belmont made their first 4 3's and were tied with Arizona at 14 with 15:34 to go in the 1st half. The Wildcats then went on 6+ minute 18-0 run and never looked back
The 32 point loss was, by far, the largest margin in a loss since Belmont joined the MVC.
Belmont shot 37.7% overall, and 44.4% (12-27) from three. But they were outrebounded 52-22 by Arizona.
Belmont's Cade Tyson, last years Freshman of the Year and a Preseason 1st team All-MVC pick this season, had just 3 points, the lowest scoring output in his Belmont career, so far. He was just 1-7 from the field (14.7%), and 0-2 from three. He has now gone 2 straight games against D1 opponents without a three pointer, a combined 0-7 in blowout losses to Furman & Arizona. And he is 5-20 overall in the 2 games against Furman and Arizona.
Belmont got 21 points from 6'9" sophomore Vanderbilt transfer Malik Dia and 13 points from sophomore Ja'Kobi Gillespie.
