Bradley overcomes a horrendous 2nd half after a great 1st half. But a nice run late to take it to overtime, and some huge free throws by Leons, and a clutch shot by Hannah for the win!- https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=483225
Malevy Leons- 24 points 14 rebounds
Deen with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists
Hannah with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists
Hickman- 8 points, 3 assists
Atlason- 6 points, Davis 5 points and 8 big rebounds, and Jonovic with 2 points

Overall we were 25-58, 10-30 from 3 and 13-16 from the FT line. We had 41 rebounds, 16 assists and 17 turnovers. UAB shot 25-74 overall, 3-19 from 3 and just 18-29 from the FT line. They had 49 rebounds, 8 assists and 11 turnovers. Leons had 24 points and 14 rebounds. Dean had 15 points and 4 assists while Hannah got the game winner and had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Davis had 8 rebounds. Atlason had 2 3's in the first half and though he didn't score the rest of the way he played at the end of the game and most of the OT so Brian obviously trust him. Defense got us back in the game after going down 9 and we made enough shots and FT's to somehow win it. Got a little help from them at the FT line but sometimes you need that help to win. I'm pooped but pumped up.

The good:
Grit. No way I thought we’d pull that off when stuck on 48 forever.
Leons - everything (cheap fouls at the end there called on him)
Deen - big shots, leading team on bench
Davis - nice contributions
Atlason - nice first game on the road
Hannah - nice all around game
The middle:
Hickman needs to be better for us to go places. Solid game though.
Ellis - again, I’ll be patient here, but this isn’t what I expected. Good defender, not much else.
Burch - early yet, I’d like to see him play some. He could be the instant offense we need.
The bad/concerns:
Meta cannot be that slow on both ends and make a difference. It’s a major concern for me. I don’t think he can be in the rotation other than as a foul body playing like that.
7 posts and no center that has any ounce of speed. Against decent centers we will be either too slow or too skinny. Where is Thomas?
No guard or point guard depth. Chances are Hick or Deen will miss a game at some point this season, much less a major injury. Then what? Also we need to play a three guard lineup, not three posts.
Our depth as a whole was not what it’s cracked up to be. Our three transfers are all but no shows early. That’s not good.

Great win! A road win against a quality opponent is so much more satisfying -- and will count more at the end of the season -- than beating a cupcake at home to start the season. Malevy played like an MVC POY candidate. 13-of-16 from the line . . . and we needed them all. I'm glad Coach Wardle scheduled this, and congrats to the team for gutting out the win. We could have had a great season without this win, but it sets us up for a terrific start. Let's keep it going!Yajusneverno!

I think Burch and Ellis will take some time to adjust, but should contribute more as the year goes on.
Meta is a concern, I'm not sure where he fits in.

Darius Hannah's game winning shot- https://twitter.com/BradleyUMBB/stat...29612994998732
Note that there was a clock error after Hannah's shot with 2.8 seconds left. The clock started before the UAB player touched the ball on the inbounds pass. Then it stopped again with 2.3 seconds left. Then restarted after he grabbed the ball. It shorted UAB about 0.5 seconds for their final possession. It likely would not have made a difference, but fortunately it was not noticed, and the officials didn't get involved and screw things up.

Looked pretty clear to me that Deen got his shot off in regulation if you watch the scoreboard light. They bailed themselves out since they had decided on the no call on Deens shot. Wild game. We really brought serious tougness not to fold it up down 11. Great win.Compete. Defend. Rebound. Win.

GAME ONE GRADES
Box Score
Jonovic - C - I think he showed flashes of his potential in this game. While I would have liked to see even more progress from last season, he's still really inexperienced. He did look slow at times, but not every team we're going to play is going to have matchups that don't serve him well. He looked like he had two left feet last year, so while this wasn't a great start, I am okay with seeing where it goes.4* JONOVIC, AHMET 2 1-3 0-0 0-0 0 1 1 0 3 0 1 0 11 -2 10* HICKMAN, CONNOR 8 3-8 2-6 0-0 0 1 1 3 2 5 0 0 37 -6 14* LEONS, MALEVY 24 8-14 2-5 6-7 3 11 14 1 5 4 1 3 39 -1 21* DEEN, DUKE 15 4-9 4-8 3-3 0 4 4 4 0 2 0 2 40 7 35* HANNAH, DARIUS 14 7-11 0-1 0-0 1 5 6 5 2 2 1 2 36 3 1 ATLASON, ALMAR 6 2-9 2-8 0-0 0 1 1 0 4 0 0 0 23 3 2 ELLIS, EMARION 0 0-3 0-1 0-0 1 2 3 1 1 1 0 0 12 4 5 DAVIS, CHRISTIA 4 0-1 0-1 4-6 0 8 8 2 3 0 3 2 27 4
Hickman - D - I'm going to be pretty harsh here because I really like Connor and I think he has shown he can be so much more on both ends of the floor. The -6 plus/minus is not a surprise. While it would be ideal if he could just be a shooting guard, the reality is that our offense needs him to handle the ball a lot and he really made a lot of mistakes (5 turnovers probably only tells some of the story). It seemed like he got slower as the game went on and didn't show that confident shot he normally has. Again, grading on where I think he can be and there's a lot more to go here.
Leons - A- - The only tick off the score here is that he goes so many stretches of a game being so passive. But, when we really needed someone with the killer instinct, especially in overtime, he had it. His defense was off the charts as always. He rebounded tonight like he's going to average a double double this season (maybe not, but something like 16pt/8reb a game doesn't seem out of the question).
Deen - B - Duke was really uncharacteristically off with the ball as well during that rough stretch in the second half. He turned it around down the stretch. You could see him being a vocal leader in the huddle. He's the engine of this team and we need him to command this offense. Played 40 minutes with only two turnovers was still good. He really makes up for being shorter on defense with his effort - he was flying all over, chasing through screens. Bad back or not, he sure seemed in good condition at least from a minutes perspective.
Hannah - A - While he still has that "put the ball down to be stripped" in his game, he's gotten so much more fluid offensively. You don't fear him taking those pull up jumpers in the lane anymore. He influences shots, even when he doesn't get blocks.
Atlason - C - I have trouble grading anyone in their first game, but it was definitely a little uneven. One thing I liked was that he had the confidence to fire from three and didn't hesitate even after missing a few. He looks to have a pretty clean shot, so I imagine he'll have big nights. I thought he got eaten up by bigger guys inside and fouled too much (one was ticky tack). He's going to need to get stronger defensively, especially rebounding.
Ellis - B - The stat line wasn't amazing but I'm giving him a bit of a better grade because he looked quick on defense. I also saw how he could easily score 3-4 buckets a game slashing to the hoop. Missing those layups hopefully won't continue, otherwise I'll grade him harsher in the future.
Davis - B - He seemed tentative on offense, at least more than I would have expected. He looked smooth to start from the line but a couple big misses hurt later in the game. 8 rebounds were impressive, although it felt like he fell into more of the right place at the right time versus winning a bunch of contested battles.
Burch - INC - I mean, he's going to be in the rotation right? We absolutely need one more guard who can handle the ball. Puzzling 0 minutes, but maybe I missed something with him?
Coaching - A- - This was one of the more confident starts to a season I've seen from Brian's teams, even with some turnover in players. It's hard to pick apart anything too much without having seen some of these new guys play yet. Would I have liked to see a bigger rotation? Sure, I would, but I haven't been there in practice to know who has really earned any playing time so far. The timeouts were appropriately taken, including the biggest one at the end where he clearly was calling it on the near tie up of Duke at the end of the game. He knew he had to bury Meta for much of the game when he was really struggling. Most of all, coach's teams never quit and even after the doors were falling off the bus, they still found a way to claw back.
Best moment: Duke, after missing the shot to win the game in regulation, going to the bench and firing everyone up for OT. He just seemed to just not allow us to lose and with a lot of quieter players, he's that guy who can the rest of the team going.
Worrying moment: We got smacked in the mouth on the boards for much of the game. 22 offensive rebounds is a recipe to lose most games. If it hadn't been for their FT shooting, our rebounding, even more than the second half turnovers, would have cost us the game.
1-0, keep it going!Go Braves!

I’m gonna agree more with BUbraves 2006 than most. On Meta let’s remember it was his first game getting any real minutes. Was it good-No but let’s not overreact. When he was in there they knew he was and it impacted their attacking. He’ll get better. 7 foot 1 guys are not a dime a dozen and if they are incredible out of the box they are one and done-patience.
I think the world of Conner Hickman but tonight he was terrible. 5 points and 5 turnovers just does not work.
But a great win against a tough opponent at their place.
I also have to give some grief to their fans. They finished 2nd in the NIT opened against a quality opponent and the crowd was not large.houstonbrave

Very good win after blowing that first half lead with careless turnovers. The officials were like somebody else said homers. Several times our defender never touched their offensive player while he was going up for a shot by the basket. Replays clearly showed or defender never touched them and still were called for fouls. Jonovic and Ellis were not good tonight , not sure how much Meta really improved because he is never in position to rebound or defend the rim. Ellis looks lost on offense. The other 6 guys really played their guts out. Liked the zone which really slowed UAB down on offense. Hoping that Thomas can give us help and Burch also in the near future.Congrats BRAVES on winning your first game against a good opponent on the road.
