Bradley will be one of several teams that won their conference's regular season, but not the conference postseason tournament, and which are not likely to receive NCAA Tournament at-large bids. That automatically qualifies them play in the NIT. Last year's NIT had 11 automatic qualifiers, including Northern Iowa of the MVC.
The announcement of the 32 teams in the 2023 NIT and the bracket will come Sunday night after the NCAA selection committee completes their selection and bracket process.
In the 2022 NIT, the winner was Xavier University. In addition to automatic qualifier Northern Iowa, Missouri State also participated as an at-large team, as did Belmont of the Ohio Valley Conference. Missouri State lost to Oklahoma in the first round, and Belmont lost to Vanderbilt in the first round. UNI lost in the second round to BYU.

Originally the tournament invited a field of six teams, with all games played at Madison Square Garden in NY City.
The field was expanded to 8 teams in 1941, 12 teams in 1949, 14 in 1965, 16 in 1968, 24 in 1979, 32 in 1980, and 40 from 2002 through 2006. From 2007 to the present, the tournament went back to the current 32-team format, with a couple exceptions. In 2020, the NIT was cancelled and in 2021 the field was reduced to 16 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The NIT has played their semifinals and final in Madison Square Garden since its inception in 1938, with the exception of 2020 (cancelled due to Covid) and 2021 (All rounds were played at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas, or the University of North Texas Coliseum in Denton, TX. due to Covid).

After playing in Madison Square Garden last year, the semifinals and finals were moved away from New York, and put up for bids. The 2023 NIT semifinals and final will be held the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas and hosted by UNLV, and the 2024 site would be Butler University's Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
