Malevy coming back next year is a gift (let's get 2 more years?). Peoria loves you, Malevy! You will definitely go down as one of the all-time greats!
I think he only has next year left as a COVID year. Mast has potentially two left with the COVID year despite announcers saying next year would be a COVID year. It is a relief to know at least Leons will be back next year, that’s a good start.

Davis is playing in his 5th season (because of the Covid rule) and he is the country's leading scorer, averaging 28.2 ppg. But he has boosted his output and averaged well over 30 points per game in the last month, playing nearly 40 minutes per game, and taking as many shots as he could to try to reach the record.

He came into last night's game in the Horizon League Tournament needing 26 points to break Maravich's record. But he only managed 22 points against the #1 seed Youngstown State. So he finished with 3,664 points, 3 shy of Pistol Pete, and 4 shy of setting a new career point total.

It is looking as if Detroit-Mercy's Antoine Davis will not get a chance at breaking Pete Maravich's all-time career scoring record of 3,667 career points set in 3 seasons between 1968-1970. He finished his season (his 5th season because of Covid) with 3,664 career points, 3 shy of Pistol Pete. There was some talk that maybe the CBI might invite Detroit-Mercy, despite their 14-19 record and their 212 NET rank. But, it did not happen. The CBI released their 16-team field, and it does not include UDM.-

Last year, there was one other postseason tournament, The Basketball Classic. It was the old College Insider Tournament (CIT) morphed into a new social justice themed tournament. It was won by Fresno State. However, there has been no evidence that The Basketball Classic still exists in 2023. Here is their website, and there has been nothing new posted since the end of last year's tournament-

Unless it is resuscitated, Pete Maravich's record is safe.

Antoine Davis, who fell 4 points short of tying Pete Maravich for the NCAA D1 career point total record, now sounds off about not getting a chance to play more games in some losers tournament.
Antoine Davis feels 'cheated' out of breaking NCAA scoring record

Davis is a fine player, but I just lost whatever respect I had for him. This is the most absurd thing I have seen in a long time. He feels "cheated"? They guy played 5 full seasons, and 144 career game, compared with 3 seasons and 83 games for Maravich. He and his Detroit Mercy team were even invited to play in The Basketball Classic last year with a losing record. His team finished 14-19 on the season, and he is bitching about not being given a chance to play in another low-level postseason tournament. The only reason he came close to breaking the record is because he played for a poor team, coached by his father, who focused more on piling up his son's point total than trying to win games.

Thanks for sharing this DC, I saw it earlier and was going to share it later. The fact anyone was giving his record chase legitimacy was absurd for the reasons you pointed out plus Pete not having a 3 point arc. I got in a debate with people on Twitter about it on the CBI post. However, I would hope anyone who supported him are rethinking their position after these ridiculous cry baby comments. If you wanted to play longer, be a winner.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Even if Davis had actually reached that point total I would have not considered it legitimate for all the reasons you just gave...extra covid year, more games played per season, 3 pt shot, etc. Just wouldn't make any sense.

Agreed. It still would have been a very respectable feat, just not even close to the same as what Pete Maravich accomplished.

The two main arguments I was confronted with was that dunking was prohibited and the athletes are better now

Plus no 3 pt shot, more games, entire extra season from COVID, etc.
