  • New Mexico St. Program suspended

BREAKING: The new allegations involving the New Mexico State program involve multiple players hazing a teammate on more than one occasion, source told @Stadium. Police report was filed in the last 24 hours. That triggered the indefinite shutdown of the program.

New Mexico State has suspended its men’s basketball program indefinitely based on “new allegations.” Not related to the shooting earlier this season. Coaches placed on administrative leave. twitter.com/colindeavertv/…

The story at New Mexico State just keeps getting more bizarre. One of their players shot and killed a student a couple months ago, and the coach and university officials were involved in trying to tamper with evidence. Now this new scandal leads to the administration suspending all men's basketball operations.

As noted in KillerB's post, the latest rumor suggests it involves hazing by team members-

From New Mexico State official: the program has suspended operations indefinitely based on "new allegations." Here's the statement. It has nothing to do with what happened in Albuquerque; completely separate incident, allegations. Coaches have been placed on administrative leave.

Wasn't New Mexico State part of the Valley at one time

Yes. Dick Versace stated that it took 3 separate planes and final travel by several rental cars to get the team to New Mexico State campus.

It is fascinating and disturbing that so many people of no integrity in sports and politics arise to high positions.

New Mexico State was in the Valley from 1970-1983.
Lou Henson was their head coach from 1966-1975, before he was hired away by Illinois. After he left Illinois in 1996, he returned to New Mexico State as their head coach from 1997-2005.

West Texas State was in the Valley at the same time. At least there you could fly in to Amarillo and it was only 10 miles or so to their campus.
Mo Cheeks played there. They also had a player who would have made the all name team. Goliath Yeggins. https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb...yeggins-1.html

Gregg Marshall coaching tree still making its impacts felt across college basketball. It's likely this culture existed while Jans was there too...it doesn't just pop up in one season.

Lest we forget Grasshopper Smith from West Texas State and Slab Anderson of New Mexico State.
