Austin Phyfe coming back for a 7th year?

Is Phyfe really going to come back?

Yes. They've started weening the blood thinners and he was told that he'll be cleared in March unless something unexpected happens. The paperwork has already been filed for the medical hardship and UNI Compliance thinks it's a slam dunk to get approved. Assuming he stays healthy (and the kid deserves it), he'll be back for his 7th year.

Phyfe's grandchildren will be able to see him play. If Roman Penn can do it, why not Phyfe?

His next appointment with his doctors is at the end of January. That would be the earliest he might be taken off the blood thinner medications....
"Phyfe is entertaining what may become a path to apply for a medical hardship waiver and seek a seventh year of eligibility.
If the appointment goes well, Phyfe could return this season and in time to help the Panthers at the MVC tournament. If doctors advise more time is necessary on blood thinning medication, applying for the waiver becomes feasible."

I would guess the NCAA will grant the waiver-don’t think they are going to say you got Covid -suffered with the aftermath but get stuffed. I would however hope he has a doctorate by the time he graduates.

I've confirmed through a source that Cal Criddle's return to BU for an extra year is false. No word yet on Mark Dohner or Doug Pomato.

I agree. If he is cleared and wants to play another year, the NCAA likely will grant a waiver. And I wish him the best.
But there are risks he will face, either way. Taking blood thinners carries a small risk, which is why he will likely be taken off them eventually.
But, people who have suffered from blood clots, whatever the cause, are more likely to get them again.
And in cases where there is not a clearly discernible and correctable cause, or cases involving the more serious complication of pulmonary embolism, life-threatening clots that travel to the lungs like in Phyfe's case, are at an even higher risk for more problems.
But it sounds like he is getting expert advice (Mayo Clinic).
