  • Evansville loses key player

Evansville got off to a horrible MVC start Wednesday, losing at home to SIU by 27 points (80-53) to drop to 2-7.
3rd leading scorer (8.6 ppg) and one of their top 3-point shooters (team-leading 14 made threes), Blaise Beauchamp, played only 11 minutes in the game and was scoreless.
Today, it was announced that he has left the program.
One of the few holdovers from the previous University of Evansville men’s basketball regime has decided to leave nine games into a new season.

Evansville ranks last among MVC teams in numerous categories, including scoring (59.7 ppg), FG% (37.2%), 3ptFG% (26.7%), assists (9.7 apg), and next-to-last in several other categories.

Boy, the Aces can't catch a break. They might not win a Valley game this year.

It is not unusual for players who were recruited by the previous coach to leave when there is a coaching change, but it is unusual for them to stay and then leave a month into the season. Beauchamp was welcomed back by new head coach David Ragland, probably because his offensive contributions would be helpful to this year's offensively-challenged team. He was the leading returning scorer from last year's team, and he made more 3-pointers last year than any other member of the team (44-123, 35.8%), despite playing far fewer minutes (20.9 mpg) compared to other starters Noah Frederking (31.2 mpg), Evan Kuhlman (29.6 mpg), Shamar Givance (31.8 mpg), and Jawaun Newton (31.9 mpg).
I suspect the fact that he was not starting, and was playing dwindling minutes off the bench (only 11 minutes in their loss Wednesday to SIU) despite contributing decent offensive numbers, lead him to decide to look elsewhere for more meaningful playing time. He played one season at a junior college (Lincoln Trail CC), where he averaged 19.0 ppg, then played a full season last year for Evansville. He is listed as a sophomore on the Evansville website, because of the extra Covid year. So if he transfers, he would have at least 2 full seasons of eligibility left (includes the extra Covid season), though it's questionable whether he could get this season's eligibility back.

Evansville's Blaise Beauchamp, who left the team and entered the transfer portal a month ago, has withdrawn from the portal, and apparently will rejoin the team for the remainder of the 2022-23 season. He plans to re-enter the transfer portal when the season is over.
He played in 9 games earlier this season, and averaged 8.6 ppg (ranks 3rd on the team) and he was shooting 33.3% from three, which is tied for 3rd best on the team.
