Ron Sanchez resigns as Charlotte head coach to assume the position of associate head coach at Virginia, a position he had held previously:
My first BU hoops game was on 12/30/1963. My dad took me to watch the Braves defeat Arizona 67-59. He helped me get Coach Orsborn's autograph before the game.

Sanchez took over a horrible Charlotte program in 2018 that had a 6-23 record the previous season and which had not had a winning conference record in 9 years. He built the program back to a degree of respectability and seemed to be headed up. This past season, he won 22 games (their most since 2001), and won the championship of the CBI.
When Sanchez first announced he was stepping down as Charlotte's head coach earlier today, he only said it was "to pursue other opportunities".
He never mentioned that he already had plans to return to Virginia as Associate Head Coach.

But literally minutes later, Virginia posted the announcement that Sanchez was returning as their Associate Head Coach, and writers who had reported him resigning at Charlotte raced to edit their stories.

Interesting Twitter thread on Sanchez by D1 Docket, a Charlotte guy:
Quick Thread on Sanchez and the last five years:
•0-3 in C-USA Tournament (one bid league)
•Under .500 overall and in league.
•Allowed a 47 possession game to happen while trailing double-digits entire 2nd half.
•Wanted to play UVA style ball but couldn’t crack Top 175 in minutes continuity (@kenpomeroy), only other school in that group with no coaching changes was Kentucky.
•Team would just pack it in early, letting teams back in to games (see final game against EKU)
Next coach:
•Prior HC experience is a must, 3 hires in a row with none. AD will be rightly crucified if we hire another assistant.
•Finally broke out of buyout cycle, can actually offer competitive salary.
•Yes I am available for podcasts.
My first BU hoops game was on 12/30/1963. My dad took me to watch the Braves defeat Arizona 67-59. He helped me get Coach Orsborn's autograph before the game.

Charlotte is a great job for the right guy. The campus is beautiful, and Charlotte is a growing and thriving "new south" city in a top 25 market. The current coach was making $700K at the time of his departure. I would expect they'll be in the $850K - $1 million range with an experienced coach.

speaking of coaches, anyone see this?
Ranking of all 362 Division I head coaches... and whoa, are they ever harsh on MVC coaches!
They have Brian Wardle at 150, but they have half the MVC coaches at ~200, 300 or higher!
Heck, one guy who hasn't ever finished above 7th in the MVC is ranked considerably higher...
Have a laugh with this one..

A few days after taking the leave of absence, he was charged with a hit and run accident, which oddly, was later dismissed
