  • WAC hoops tourneys to be seeded using advanced analytics

WAC altering basketball tournament formats by introducing bold new seeding concept based on advanced analytics

My first BU hoops game was on 12/30/1963. My dad took me to watch the Braves defeat Arizona 67-59. He helped me get Coach Orsborn's autograph before the game.

You know you’re in for some tomfoolery when the word algorithm is dropped!

He who controls the ‘algorithm’ controls the outcome!

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

The WAC expands to 14 teams in 2022-23, but they plan to continue their 18-game schedule. That creates an unbalanced schedule with some teams playing the top teams twice, while other teams may only play top teams once, and maybe just on their home floor. So if they used the actual standings to seed their tournament, it would favor those teams that got the luck of the better schedule draw. Using analytics like Kenpom is maybe their way of trying to make the seeding a bit more fair.
All conferences want to get their best teams in the NCAA Tournament. And there are other conferences undergoing expansion resulting in unbalanced schedules. So we could see this method used by other conferences.
